XPS 8930, support for Intel 9th gen CPU?

Hello,

Does XPS 8930 motherboard support Intel's 9th gen processors? If so, which ones does it support? Also, where can I find the general list of supported processors for XPS 8930?

Thanks,

Sep

XPS 8930 specs only list 8th generation Intel Core i3/i5/i7/i7k processors. At a minimum the XPS 8930 with its Z370 chipset will require a BIOS update to support the 9th generation. Intel is launching a new Z390 chipset with the 9th generation Core processor.

It might be possible because the Gen 9 CPUs, which use the new Z390 chipset, are supposed to be backward compatible with the Z370 chipset that's on the XPS 8930 motherboard. So it all depends on whether BIOS gets updated to support the new CPUs.  I tend to doubt any OEM will make that happen because they won't want to compete with sales for new PC models that come with Gen 9 CPUs.

The specs for the XPS 8930 say: 8th generation Intel Core i3/i5/i7/i7

Only Dell will know exactly which Gen 8's are supported and/or search these forums to see if anyone has mentioned upgrading the CPU in an XPS 8930.

EDIT: Vic384 types faster than I do.  :Surprise:

Not sure what the point is, because that processor should really have a Liquid-Cooler (if you plan to actually use the CPU near it's full abilities) and AFAIK, the XPS-8930 isn't really designed to handle a Liquid-Cooler.

There is  this on the sales page: "The 3-heat-pipe system, available with optional k-skus, moves heat efficiently from the CPU and is subjected to rigorous, proprietary testing to make certain all components are kept within their thermal specifications."

I'm not sure how you order that option or if it's automatically included with an i9 CPU.

And it's the same motherboard and chipset as an XPS 8930 with an i8 CPU. BIOS was updated to support the i9, and systems shipped with the i9 will have BIOS that supports this CPU.

I see at least two XPS 8930 i9 systems listed on the Sales site...

After spending the last hour on Tech support, Sales support, customer support, online chat...not one person was able to tell me what motherboard the XPS 8930 is currently shipping with to have an i9-9900k at 5.0ghz.

I'll assume from this, that it is the cheapest one...with a bios made to make it work.

The motherboard is the same one that shipped with earlier XPS 8930 models....it's just a BIOS update to support the new CPU.

The version of the motherboard on this i9-9900K  version IPCFL-VM, is the same motherboard from my XPS 8930 purchase in the summer with an  i7 8700.

(the attached fan would blow through that dark part of the radiator, and up through the top case fan)

FWIW, those SE Fans are almost impossible to find, and Dell refuses to sell them separately.
