Because I'm really disappointed about the reliability of my XPS 15 9500 and the WD19TB, I try to switch from Thunderbolt to USB-C. The WD19TB has an unsolved IPv6 issue. Additionally (and this is much more annoying) I often get black screens when pushing power button on dock with two attached external monitors (via DP) and closed lid. Last evening I send Windows 10 to hibernate because sleep mode doesn't work properly and on resuming this morning, the whole system crashed and rebooted, so I lost the work of yesterday evening.
BTW: I know that WD19 is less powerful than WD19TB and I cannot attach two 4k displays. But the reliability is very bad.
Because the WD19TB has a 180W power adapter already, my question is: Can I buy the cheaper 130W version of WD19 and use the existing 180W adapter or is there any internal/technical difference between WD19 130W and WD19 180W?
@robert.toga Yes you can buy the 130W version and use your existing 180W adapter. Although I don’t know if the WD19TB would work properly with a 130W adapter, so if you wanted to sell the WD19TB, that might be an issue.
Also note that the XPS 15 9500 is a DisplayPort 1.2/HBR2 system, not 1.4/HBR3. The specs claiming that the right-side port supports DP 1.4 are incorrect, since that output is wired to the Intel GPU even if you have an NVIDIA GPU and the Intel GPU in that system is only DP 1.2. The reason I mention this is that as a result, with a WD19 you’d be limited to dual displays up to 1920x1200, or a single display up to 2560x1600 60 Hz, or a single 4K display only at 30 Hz. Just making sure you know what you’d be downgrading to.
@jphughan Thanks a lot. You're absolutely right. When selling the TB I should have a second 180W PSU. I've ordered a WD19 180W now. The next weeks will show the difference, if system is running stable.
Yes, that's a big downside, that I'm limited in connectivity. But I have not planned to buy WQHD or 4k displays in the next 3-4 years.
That was quick. Today the WD19 180W arrived. Replaced the WD19TB with the WD19. Hibernate Windows 10 Pro for 2 hours, came back to laptop and pushed power button on WD19 dock. What happens? Screen remains black. Same thing as with WD19TB. Even when opening laptop lid in this situation, the screen remains black. Powered off via pushing power button again (the systems powers off, immediately, so it hadn't booted up yet) and powered on, then Windows booted
@Anonymous, I'm really disappointed. The XPS15 has a really great and big display. It's really great to put two DIMMs and two NVMe into this really tiny case. But these massive problems on powering on or docking/undocking are horrible. I'm a bit angry about the costs, because I've upgraded RAM and put two NVMe in additionally. The decision is made, I'm going back to Lenovo now.
1. Do you get a bluescreen error or an error code when the system crashes?
2. We may not be able to troubleshoot regarding the Virtualbox application specifically.
3. Have you tried disabling hibernate or deleting the hiberfil.sys file that the system uses to manage the hibernate function?
4. Have you tried increasing the virtual memory /paging files on the computer. This is usually managed by the OS however, it may not be very efficient. You would ideally want it set up as 1-2 times the RAM installed.
Firmware on XPS15, WD19 and WD19TB are the latest. These power on issues happen only in docked mode with WD19 and WD19TB. But this does not happen every time, often when system is powered off for some hours, but even then, not every time. When un-docked, booting up is fine. BIOS settings are nearly factory default.
I'm using this laptop for work, so I have some VirtualBox machines running all the time. Normally, I shut down Windows with hibernate mode, so I can resume my work on the next day. In addition to the boot problems mentioned above, it happens multiple times now, that when resuming from hibernate Windows crashes or the VMs crashed. That is a fresh Windows installation. All these boot and hibernate problems do not happen on my laptops used before (I had two Thinkpads before this Dell).
I was a bit euphoric about the specs of this 9500 with two replacable DIMMs and two NVMe, which gives many opportunities for backing up data on second NVMe. Nevertheless, I need more reliability.
@robert.toga Honestly with the speed of NVMe drives, hibernations is hardly even a concern at this point. My laptop boots in literal seconds. I either leave it on, with screen saver and turn off sleep/hibernation, or I turn off the laptop.
