What model XPS is it and how old is it? From the many comments here XPS batteries seem to die or even worse start swelling after a little over a year making them hazardous. That is what happened to my 9550 after a little over a year. You need to take precautions with the LION batteries. If you constantly keep "refreshing" the charge up to 100%, it can shorten their life. What you want to do is set a maximum charge to around 80% and a minimum recharge point at around 50%. This can increase their life. There are BIOS options or a Dell utility (Dell Power Manager) to do this. Once the battery starts to swell you need to get it out. Good luck.
