Alienware Nvidia 30xx vs other brand

I've been searching the difference between alienware nvidia version vs founders edition or any brand (performance wise) online and I can't seem to find it. Does anybody know what's the difference? 

Like our 3090. It's a lot shorter than the original or other brands but does that mean it's less performance as well?

Length of the card  is not an indicator of performance.

3000 series are sold out as far as I can tell.

Dell oem cards are clocked differently and made for Dell by ECS and MSI etc.

There is no one size fits all so you would have to name the model number and maker of a card.

The Dell cards, currently sourced from MSI, are factory overclocked like 3rd party. Somone here posted Dell 3080 card specs and the frequency is the same as my EVGA XC3 Ultra Gaming, 1755Mhz. Founder Editions are not factory overclocked.

Performance is debateable.

Swings and roundabouts for temperatures and noise 

Alienwares have slightly better CPU temperatures with OEM GPU cards as they are blowers, this means less heat is transferred inside the nano-case around the CPU as it exhausts most of the heat through the back of the case. On the otherhand, they can register slightly higher GPU temperatures causing the fan to spin faster.

Blower cards generally have a single fan running up to 5000RPM, this can generate a few more decibels compared to 3rd party cards having 2-3 fans at 3000 RPM that are barely audible even at 2300RPM which is good for keeping temperatures under 75° in gaming conditions.

I have the Dell 3080 so if you wanted me to check anything specific let me know.

I have taken it apart so can also post photos. Reference design PCB. Shorter cooler.

@Vanadiel  I just checked the dozen photos I took, and like a total plonker they were literally all of the front of the card, or the back AFTER I had installed the heat-plate. Sorry!

Here are a couple of closer shots of the front. The card is now in a water block so not able to remove.

Frequency is not the same as the card you have. The boost clock  is 1710 Mhz, not 1755 Mhz.

Mine can boost to 2050 Mhz under certain conditions.

The main difference between this card and retail cards:

- Locked power limit to 100%.

- Locked over voltage. I have read, but not experienced, that you can under volt these cards.

- More compact design of the heat sink.

- 2 fan cooling solution.

- Regular 2 x 8 pin power connector instead of the Nvidia 1 x 12 pin.

- Triple slot design.

- Due to Alienware design limitations this card will only run at PCIe 4 x 8 when in an Alienware motherboard. It can run PCIe 4 x 16 in most other boards. It is a limitation of the Alienware motherboard, not the video card.

- Can run hot in the Alienware case due to limited air flow in that case. Would highly suggest to have a utility like GPU-Z running to check the Tjunction memory temperature. 

- Seems to be a certain failure rate with these cards, based on reports on this board from users who's cards failed. You can read up on those threads in the first few pages of this board.

Since you have it torn apart: Would love to see a picture of the other end of the card, more specific the area around the back of the CPU.

Just to see what type of capacitors they used on this card.

 

Also, noticed it is made in China, so should be nothing but the best, lol.

The Made In China note sits alongside a version number. If you google that number it appears to coincide with a MSI card as expected:

MSI RTX 3080 GAMING X TRIO 10G graphics card NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 10 GB GDDR6X V389-005R

Just a guess, but that is probably the PCB they are using.

That MSI card uses 3x8 pin, so not identical, but one would guess we are looking at a MSI reference design as expected.

There's a thread I found at another location where someone flashed a retail bios in their Alienware 3090 and it worked fine. This unlocked the power limits etc...

So technically speaking you could likely flash the bios from the MSI RTX 3080 GAMING X TRIO 10G graphics card NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 10 GB GDDR6X V389-005R into this Alienware card.

That should get rid of the limitations DELL put in the Vbios.

 

I don't recommend trying it, but others have done it. (not with this specific card) You would need to know how to manually flash, as an auto updater will not work.

This is of course completely unsupported and completely not recommended and could brick your card or caus e unknown side effects/issues/errors.
