Area-51 ALX, shutting down

Hi everyone, so here is my problem, I found an Area-51 ALX for less than 100$ with I7 930 GTX 480SLI 6GB ram, 1200W psu

but i swaped for a radeon rx 64 vega, and once i launched assassin's creed unity befor reaching the menu, the computer restarded instantly, tried black desert online and warframe i was able to play 10-20mins before restart, i wanted to try another to be sure so i installed shadow warrior 3 and i left i it all the night long, woke up the game was still running. I i did power bench on occt with the 2 gtx 480 computer was running fine, did the same with the vega 64 it has crashed at 1sec of the bench, got all the drivers updated, bios a 10.                                                                                                                               im planing to change motherboard and cpu, but if someone can help with This first.

ps: the gpu is powered by 2 different cable

I'm trying to work this out by the numbers

There are two 1200w models, J297R & VHM5V, the latter is MARGINALLY 'better'; both have a pair of WHT & YLW cables that come from (soldered to) the 'internal' chassis, which on paper (& in practice) are superior to the extra two cables (YLW + BLU/YLW) that come from the generic external case harness, thus when plugging in a solo-card, ALWAYS use the onboard / internal PSU WHT/YLW chassis PCI-E cables as your best power hope (if u suspect a power issue & even if u do not)

Reference Vega 64 is a 295w card (no more than say HD5970 which otherwise ran fine in X-Fire on the 1100w PSU, 1200w PSU does eqwally fine) & GTX 480 are 250w each, I understand u have a pair there & they 'work' w/ this PSU w/ out issue as they should

Typically, best practice says 480 SLI w/ 1200w PSU connects w/all x4 1200w PSU PCI-E cables

You say Vega 64 is being connected w/ two 'discrete' (individual) 8pin (6+2) cables, & so there should NOT be a power / restart issue when connected that way, but there is

My suggestions are thus:
1) Vega 64, not as a card, but as YOUR card, is the issue > test it in a different system for stability & report back
2) If u have J297R 1200w, buy a pair (x2 sets) of Y-Split EVGA x2 6pins into x1 8pin adaptors, run ALL FOUR PSU PCI-E cables into card's x2 8pins & test

  • VHM5V 1200w, would not need this, it has a single PCI-E 12v rail design
  • back your PSU out & inspect part# to determine which model u have

3) Buy an EVGA PowerBoost & install into PCI-E slot & test > & > also try #2 above for good measure ... 295w cards should NOT break this 1200w PSU, EVER
4) It's a SOFTWARE, maybe driver issue the likes of which may be hard to solve
5) Replace the PSU, but, it seems the least likely culprit here: Dell sold/made us good PSUs, GOOD ONES, but they still fail for ambiguous reasons, my 1100w just failed just booting up ....

My guess is your Vega is bad? But above are (non-easy / non-palatable) ways to test it & the PSU & mthrbrd (X58 infamously incapable) PCI-E slots

295w cards do NOT bring Dell 1200w PSUs to their knees ... 375w 6990 X-Fire? ok, install VHM5V, but not a solo-Vega, a 295w card, is, par for the course

You the man i was looking for, so after checking It the j297R model, the thing is, when I set the power consumption of the gpu to 110w it’s running fine, then I put it back to default it crashing on gaming and it only up to 230W max

I really hope that the problem ain’t coming from the psu cause can’t afford another card right now as I will buy msi 550 pro motherboard with ryzen 5 5600 and new ssd m2 32GB ram, by the same time will look for what you said power boost and y cable, then come back here to update the post

Generally, mthrbrds were/are designed for the PCI-E slots (& so vid-card) to be fed 12volts through just the 24pin (& its x2 12volt wires/pins), so again, the PowerBoost inserted into an open PCI-E slot helps saturate those slots w/ an extra 12volt source (PSU Molex 4pin ... buy a Molex 4pin extension when needed), for those situations where the 24pin is not sufficient to feed the vid-card & shutdown (or burnouts) occur

J297R is a multiple 12volt rail design PSU, where each vid-cable is on its own rail; above, the WHT & YLW pair are each a discrete rail & the case harness YLW & Blu-Ylw are also, so four rails. The idea behind the dual 6pin -to- 8pin y-split adaptors is to get ALL FOUR rails powering the vid-card instead of just two, or rather, if the PSU is shutting off / restarting in protection mode due to one (or two) overloaded rail(s) ... if that is it ... then using the y-splits & getting all four rails involved, if that stops restart/shutdown issues?, then ok, two rails wasn't enough

The 1000w PSU got just two vid-cables (= two 12v video rails), the 1100w got three (= 3 rails)

Below, a Radeon 295x2 would restart/shutdown when using two of an 1100watter's vid-cables (blu/ylw etc), so its 3rd BLK cable & thus its 3rd 12volt rail was deployed using the y-splits & this setup helped keep the 295x2 always up & running --> 'three cables becomes two' --> for you, your y-splits will turn four into two & we'd HOPE that works, but again, we're still worried why a 295w card causes this to begin with even (on the two cables/rails you use now)

I see u loaded a pic of your WHT + YLW 8pins, which means you've chosen to run the two superior chassis cables. It occurs to me, you can TRY another test, where since you've already coupled the WHT/YLW set to your card, it may be wise to try all combinations of cables (see example below) in the event your PSU has a bad or weak (old) 12v rail, to test:

  • if chassis WHT + YLW results in a shutdown/restart, then pair WHT to the case harness YLW & RETEST
  • if they fail, pair chassis WHT to case harness BLU, RETEST, BUT TRY ALL COMBINATIONS (ie chassis YLW w/ case YLW & then w/ case BLU, then try the case YLW + BLU), you're looking for a combination that will not fail / restart / shutdown
  • IF YOU DO DISCOVER a combination of cable-pairs that WORK?, it could mean an internal PSU fault on one or two 12v rails, whichever cable(s) you used that result in shutdown

Your working 480 SLI setup inspires confidence in the PSU, & its four rails, were it not for this Vega issue. I do suggest again u test that Vega in another system if possible

As for connecting, below are two pics of the best way to connect A51 cables to a vid-card. I see you chose the P21 & P24 6+2s, while here I insert the superior P20 & P23 6pins & I 'borrow' the 2pins off of 21 & 24

Above, my new R1 came w/an 1100w that has an intermittent internal fault so I'm temporarily using a 1000w & its pair of vid-cables for the 300w GTX 690, by inserting the primary 6pins & borrowing the 2pins (from the side-jumper 6+2 setup). When testing your vid-cable combinations you're encouraged to connect yours this way also. Good luck

edit: for the record, I sent my J297R to JonnyGuru for a SunMoon bench test, its rails shutoff at like 19amps = 228watts ... the 1000 & 1100w have 18amp rails which should shutdown between 18-20amps = 216w - 240w ... YOUR PSU should be dishing out 216w - 240w before shutdown, on EACH cable, thus your Vega SHOULD be getting over 400watts & not have a power issue like this ...

JonnyGuru suggests everyone replace a PSU if it is over 10years old, since the capacitors age out, u may need a new stock or aftermarket PSU, I wish I knew

Big test day this Morning, so i bought an rx6650xt wich is 150watt needed only 8pins almost the same thing during occt power bench the pc shuting down only if i open microsft edge or other navigator, tried black desrt online for the gaming part, left the game runing without moving for 30 mins gpu power 100-130W no crash , got back started moving and killing monster the gpu power got a lilttle bit higher 140-150W after 15mins Pc shuted down. it has only worked wit P17,P19,P21,P24 cables.

insert rx vega 64 again tried occt power with every cable connection possible the result are the same, pc shuting down instantly, same with assanssin's creed unity game crash with default settings in amd pro softaware but playable with the balanced preset cause the gpu running under 100W.

now my wife want me to sell the Alien LOL.
