this is a late edit: Dellware told us there was no Xeon support, but here's a listing for J560M + x5660  ... note it's on Bios A11 (last final version)

__________

Original Post: 51 & Aurora (R1) run all Bloomfield & Gulftown (skt LGA 1366) - no Xeon support - for 980x / 990x have Bios A10 / A11 (Aurora = A09 or later), 80x prolly best-per-$ upgrade

what im saying is that gulftown is based on westmere so souldnt it work or did alien ware "alienate" haha xeons all together? by the way the mother board is the J560M V1 if that helps (green accents). the only reason i want a xeon is because for the price they are quite powerfull. and multiple websites say that for example the x5675. this website says its compatible https://www.game-debate.com/motherboard/index.php?mot_id=3272&cpuList=Alienware%20Area%2051%20ALX it says under the xeons tab

isnt gulftown based on westmere? also if not would a w3670 or somthing from the 36** series work then? Because searching for gulftown xeons comes up with x56 and w36 series. Thanks , Zach

Hi, it says it fits the 1366 socket, but there isn't (supposed to be) any Xeon micro-code in the bios firmware to run one; when asked in the past if Xeons can work, the mods here said it isn't on their list of supported CPUs & I'd never heard of anyone reporting success, until maybe a moment ago after a google search

The question was rarely asked here & no one reported success here, I told u what the mods told us. If in the beginning Bios editions there was no Xeon support, maybe the firmware engineer 'silently' snuck the code into the last editions, I wish I knew, but the advice below is you must have Bios A10 (A11 is the final) for it to work

Westmere Xeon Upgrade/ project

Note the XPS board in the link is a J560M twin, they're the same since they share Bios versions. I see word of Xeon 5650 working, I see the W3580 is $35 eBay, why not just try one & maybe search Anandtech forum for similar posts

Thanks for the helpful information! I think a friend of mine has some old 1366 xeons laying around so Ill test it with one of those when I have the time (**bleep** xeons like w3503 and e5xxx).
