Aurora R10, FPS Cap

March 24th 2021, received new R10, updated drivers and firmware, started to play games.

COD Cold War

Doom Eternal

Digital Combat Similator

Flight Sim 2020

No matter how low the game settings were set, I could not get above 125 FPS.  When playing all but Flight Sim 2020, All games at highest settings,(no ray tracing) same FPS cap.

All setting on these games have unlimited FPS, and have also tried limiting to 150 FPS and to no avail no matter the settings, FPS stuck at 125.

System benchmarks at 248fps on 1440p on 3dmark Dx12

Called Dell support, hour and a half later, support made it worse, fixed that but still 125 Max FPS.

Ryzen 5600x, RX 6800 XT  32GB Dual Channel 3200 Ram

Bios does have the Ram speed at 3200

Please help!!!

Thank You!!

Hello @DumbestDew

Welcome to the community

What Rig, GPU, monitor and cable do you have?

I think you are limited based on synced monitor or limited by the DP/HDMI cable.

I'm using the display port.

Also I don't know if it matters, but it runs a benchmark just fine.

Maybe the problem is your DP cable.

For my monitor, right from the start I bought a very high speed DP cable as sometimes the DP cable supplied with the monitor is not up to scratch for going over 120FPS, you are getting 125FPS in most situations with a 164Hz setting

Same monitor although I have a different GPU (RTX 3080).

My RTX 3080 was in my R8, now in my refurbished rig. I had the same monitor connected previously to my R8 and now connected to my refurbished rig.

In both situations I was capped at 120FPS, yet this monitor can go to 164Hz in 1440p resolution. The option however was never shown anywhere and impossible to select, whether in windows, NVIDIA, device settings.

I had to create a Custom Resolution in NVIDIA Control Panel to get 164Hz available.

@DumbestDew

Since your monitor is synced on 164Hz and you only get max 125FPS on most games, your Freesync monitor whether synced or not is being limited by something else.

Your settings in windows are fine. You check the AMD pilot software settings, but I doubt this is limiting anything. It will probably say your monitor is on 164Hz as is in your image of windows display properties.

As I said before, the cable that came in the box is probably limiting the throughput.

You should test a high speed DP cable. For example you will need a Displayport cable 2k > 164Hz cable.

When you have tried a new DP high-speed cable, do come back and let us know either way.

Oh and I forgot to say before, welcome to the community

The saga continues;

Purchased a Display Port Cable 1.4

No change

I have run games(Doom and COD Cold War) with free sync, both on and off, in game at both 1440 and 1080, I am getting the same performance metrics, almost identical.  This includes running both games on ultra and also low(no ray tracing on either), the system never runs over 130 fps and averages around 118 fps.

On the other hand on Direct3D with free sync off the fps is in the 80-85 range, with it on its in the 240 range, that's at 1440p using direct12.

In 1080p using direct 11 there is no difference in fps when free sync is off or on.  The fps average is around 580.

Any ideas?

Hmm

Sorry about that @DumbestDew, the original cable may have been up to scratch.

However after some pondering, I just noticed a difference in your settings from mine in images posted. Might be the guilty bandwidth hogging setting

Can you change the bit depth in your AMD driver to match the setting in my NVIDIA driver, that is from 10bpc to 8bpc?

In NVIDIA it shows as "Output color depth"

You should make sure it shows 8bit on Bit depth Windows Display Properties, again here is my image:
