Aurora R12, BIOS screen is white while using older model video card

Hello. I installed a DELL RX580 into a new Aurora R12 i7 11th generation computer. The computer boots into Windows perfectly and functions 100%.

However: the BIOS screen is white, and the startup logos are white rectangular boxes. I have tried this with several cables and two different monitors.

Based on this reply it seems that the Dell BIOS may not show video from an older card while secure boot is enabled? Is there any way for me to see the BIOS while using this older video card? Would disabling secure boot fix the issue?

Try using DDU to wipe the drivers for the old card that shipped with the PC, and then wipe and clean install the AMD drivers in safe mode.

Thank you for the suggestion, I'll try this. I only uninstalled, DDU is worth trying.

Are the Windows drivers even involved at pre-OS boot, or in the BIOS though?

If it boots fine into windows and it works there, it should work in the boot screen also.

Did it do the same with the original card in it?

You could check with GPU-Z if the card has the required UEFI.

If it does and it does not display during the boot process, you can try running the bios is CSM (Compatibility Support Module)

However, I do not think the R12 has a bios option to enable CSM. R12 bios manual

The original RTX graphics card displayed the BIOS normally.

The BIOS seems to require a UEFI GOP driver in order to display.

See: https://superuser.com/questions/1349006/how-does-one-find-gpus-that-use-uefi-gop-instead-of-legacy-vbios

Would disabling Secure Boot allow the BIOS to display without a UEFI-ready graphics card?

The RX 580 shows as UEFI compatible, the checkbox is marked.

This article exactly describes my problem =

Why the computer screen is blank when booting to Windows 7 with Secure Boot enabled in the BIOS settings

"you may notice the screen is blank before Windows 7 starts to load. The Dell logo may not appear"

It looks like the solution is to disable Secure Boot. Do you know where I can find directions for disabling Secure Boot in my motherboard (key press sequence?), given that I can't see the BIOS screen? I would need to know when to press enter, right, and F10.

I don't have an R12 to test, but the bios manual I listed above does not seem to contain the option to turn off secure boot.

That is not to say it is not there, because that manual is rather generic and could use an update.

Maybe try with the original card, to see if the setting is available in the bios?

I am having the same issue, but with an AMD RX 480, and spent several hours trouble shooting it yesterday .  Initially I tried putting in a very old GeForce 9800, but the system refused to even recognize the screen and display anything.  Then tried putting in an AMD RX 480 (8gb), that would boot, but with the Alienware logo as a white box.  But at least it would boot to Windows, and seemed to run properly.  BUT, if trying to get into the BIOS or Boot Manager, the screen turned and stayed white!  Only way I could get into the BIOS & Boot Manager was to borrow my son's Nvidia 1070 card.  Then everything seems to work properly.

I found a user manual for the R12 that listed only about about a dozen video cards it supported.  This is discouraging, if only such a few video card options can be used with these machines.

https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-us/alienware-aurora-r12-desktop/alienware-aurora-r12-setup-and-specifications/gpu%E2%80%94discrete?guid=guid-9310b670-9461-4c64-a7ba-f7c97bc7f754&lang=en-us

So I am guessing that older video cards will not work properly in this machine.  Without a different card to borrow, I could not have gotten into the BIOS at all.  But now with the AMD card installed, not sure how I can ever access the BIOS or Boot Manager again.  So, I am following this thread with great interest!

You would  have to enable CSM in the system bios. However, I could not find that anywhere in the manual for the R12. My R10 has that option.

If you have that option enabled, it should provide compatibility with video cards that do not have proper UEFI GOP support.

Were you able to find a fix or a compatible card? I'm in the same boat.

Hi, Had the same issue, i had set my my display port to the correct version, also was told it will do the same thing if the hdmi version isn't correct. I went from 1.4 to 1.2 and my splash screen and bios was able to be seen,  on a dell precision 5810. The settings should be in your onscreen monitor controller.

This appears to be fixed with the new bios update that just came out, Version 1.1.10. At least my older card, a EVGA GeForce GTX TITAN X SC GAMING now works perfectly. Can see the proper start up screen and get to the bios settings.
