Aurora R12 Upgradability
Hi all!
New to this forum.. & the Alienware community! So please correct me if I’m wrong, or apologies is this thread is in the wrong place.
I’ve just purchased an Aurora R12 (3090) PC. I have a few questions, if anyone is kind enough to answer.
- The 3090 is a custom sized GPU built for Alienware. How will this impact me, in say 3-4 years wanting to upgrade the GPU? Or am I expected to buy a complete new PC?
- In general, how easy is it to upgrade components in the PC itself?
- Does having a smaller GPU (custom built 3090 for the R12) impact on GPU performance, to a say… ‘full size one’?
- Any overall tips/tricks to longer the lifespan of the PC?
Many thanks!

With the speed at which hardware development is going these days, you will likely be better off to upgrade to a complete new machine in 3 to 4 years, rather than upgrading the GPU. Since you have a current top of the line machine, I don't foresee any need to upgrade in 3 to 4 years unless you want to run something exotic, and even then the RTX 3090 will have enough juice to make it work
Upgrading the components is limited to what will fit in the case, and what the power requirements are. These systems are picky when it comes to memory, and there are some helpful posts on this board from users who upgraded their memory and post the full part numbers of what they exactly got.
The size matters less than the quality of the cooling solution, and Gamersnexus on youtube recently did a tear down of the Alienware RTX 3090 card and was impressed with the cooling solution used on it. He in general does not like DELL products often.
For lifespan I would say keep it in a well ventilated cool low dust place and keep an eye on your GPU and Vram temperatures. I would use MSI afterburner for it, and GPU-Z, both free programs. I would also change the default fan curves to be a bit more aggressive and tune them for optimal cooling without causing a large amount of noise.

Hi @DELL-Chris M please move this Aurora R12 thread to the Alienware Desktops forum. Thanks.

Fans is another tricky upgrade on these. There's only a few models of fans that work properly with these systems. There's a couple threads with results and part numbers.
Fans are internal, I am not sure what you mean with external fans?

Hi! & thanks, is there any way I can fit external fans to the system?

You can upgrade later on to any GPU that is 267mm in length

Sorry an error in my wording.
I just meant say if I bought a ‘Cooler Master’ fan, would I be able to fit that inside somewhere? Or would it have no room.

There's 1 more location to somewhat "fit" a fan, but it requires the 3.5 inch hdd cage to be removed and some ty-wraps to hold it in place.
It will also require a fan power cable splitter, and the correct type of aftermarket fan.
There's a fan thread on the board somewhere that explains it in more detail, and with pictures.

Hi @afatpigeon if there is a powerful modern full-size graphics card that you want to use with your Aurora R12, get an external graphics card enclosure. Have a look at the sliding table in Best eGPU Enclosures - External GPU Buyer Guide, to get eGPU enclosure for your full-size powerful graphics card option.
