Aurora R7, Help me with SSD

Question

Hello folks please help me , i currently have the R7 with the optane and i am trying to change it to an SSD i was planing to get the evo 970 and i heard it fit my R7 but i really want the Evo 980 since its not a lot difference in $ , but does it fit the R7? thank you so much

The Aurora-R7 accepts M.2/NVMe so it can use any NVMe-SSD ... as that is the industry-standard now-days. M.2 is the slot. 2280 is the size (or form-factor).

Samsung 970 or 980 SSD will work, EVO or Plus is fine. Traditionally, "Best" is Pro-Series (if they still make those).

Additionally, PCIe Gen-3 is backwards compatible with Gen-4, so no problems there either.

thank you so much for your help and glad i asked it was on my amazon cart , so idk about money its 1 time installation for me so please tell me what is the best SSD? and why 970 evo but not the plus? ive seen the comparison youtube its better? so so far  the samsung 970 is the best one for the R7

I just did this to my R7. You don't want the 980. I only can find the 980 Pro - is the Evo even out? In any event, the 980 switched to Gen 4. Your mobo only supports Gen 3. Get the 970 Evo (not the plus). Or better yet, save $35 and get the Western Digital SN550. They are all M.2 drives and it's easy to swap out the Optane drive for the NVME. You can follow this guy's video if you want to see how it's done step by step.

You don't need to take the PSU out though like in the video. You can try to clone the hard drive, but I read a lot of folks had trouble doing that so I followed the same path of downloading the back up from Dell and reinstalling Windows that way. It took a lot longer, but eventually got there.

Yes, this will fit and work. SAMSUNG 980 PRO 1TB M.2-NVMe I can't believe how inexpensive these are now-days.

Samsung traded MLC for PCIE 4.0 when going from 970 pro to 980 pro. As far as long term reliability, the 970 pro is probay a better drive (which is why Samsung rated it for 600 TBW as compared to 1200 TBW on the 970 pro). If you are planning to upgrade to a pcie 4.0 system later and transfer the drive yeah it would make sense to get the pro to take advantage of the awesome benchmarks.

Keep in mind that although the benchmarks put it at 7000/5000 r/w, you will be looking at half the benchmarked scores in the R7, because the R7 only supports up to PCIE 3.0, which is half the speed of 4.0.

Totally a matter of personal preference, and intended use.  They are both awesome drives that should serve you well.  I was just pointing out why the 970 pro is more expensive than the 980 pro.  It is a good price for a pro drive, just be aware of the changes they made in their pro lineup.
