Aurora R8, front right USB port

Just posting my recent experience with the Aurora R8. First time using the front usb ports on the R8.  I inserted a usb connector to a headset into the right most port and the plastic divider over the pins snapped straight off. The other 2 ports seem fine so this isn't a huge issue at the moment but I would like to flag this and check if there is an easy fix. I don't particularly want to send the computer away for a month for repair (Will take at least 10 days shipping each way because of where I live).

Check the manual pg 8-- https://topics-cdn.dell.com/pdf/alienware-aurora-r8-desktop_users-guide_en-us.pdf

You should probably verify it works ok and just ask Tech Support next week (closed weekends) to make sure it is just cosmetic. Nothing should fall off on a new computer. I don't know what kind of plastic divider you meant. I don't see it in the illustration. Headphones don't use a usb port. There is a round headphone port on the front. See pg 8.

If you look at the photos the usb port snapped off at the data contacts that's not cosmetic.

The headset uses a usb type A connector as it supports both a microphone and headphones (usb can be used for digital audio). I didn't try and put a headphone jack in a usb port. This was the first time that particular port was used and I was not trying to force the cable. The other ports seem to be just fine so I was wondering if there was a manufacturing defect on this one.

The plastic over the data contacts came out pretty easily so it's not stuck in the port. The usb port still works but the male connector is quite wobbly when inserted there. Sound quality is actually ok through the broken port which was a surprise. I was expecting more noise even just from movement of the cable.

I would consider replacing the port if it can simply be plugged out + a new one plugged but I don't particularly want to do that if it involves soldering/rewiring.

New USB-ports can be a bit tight ... especially on the Auroras like R8.

Power-down and carefully remove the piece of USB-device that broke-off inside port. Maybe get a friend that knows computers to help.

Please, try to be more gentle.

Your USB 3.0 1.0 connection is not a small part that could be easily swapped with a plug and play replacement part (see photo).

Stuff like this unfortunately happens.  Happened to me too, on a Dell monitor (see photo).  You just have to live with it.  Luckily there are other connections, including more USB SS on the back of your PC.  Dell's standard warranty doesn't cover physical damage like what you and I have so I doubt it would be a worthwhile use of your time to send it in for a warranty repair.
