Aurora R8, Intel BXTS13X Water/Liquid Cooling

Have a look at this Cooling unit tell me what you think about it being a good backup for the OEM system on the R8 9900K 2080. Is the OEM cooling quite good and dependable, any breakdowns?

Have this beast on order and wondering how the cpu temperatures are with the OEM cooling unit?

The reviews on the unit are very good. The common consensus is that it is a bit of a pain to install but the operation is very good. I have found Intel products in general to be well engineered.

Thx JOcean I have a new R8 9900k on order, your opinion on the OEM cooling unit and dependability, problems etc would be appreciated thx

The problem with ALL Liquid cooling solutions is Silica Drop out over time. Ethylene Glycol  A colorless syrupy alcohol, HOCH2CH2OH, used as an antifreeze/boil/corrosion in cooling systems.

This causes goo to build up and eventual failure and leaks.

Silicates are  abrasive in a cooling system, and cause  water pump seal failure.Organic Acid Technology or OAT's are coolants that are formulated without the use of silicates.  They don't use this in coolers because its more expensive and they dissolve plastic seals.  Common components to OAT coolants are Carboxylate, sebacate, and 2-ethylhexanoic acid (2-EHA), which are corrosion inhibitors, used instead of silicates. 

Either way over time the coolant tends to turn to a thick, gooey, sticky, muddy, gritty, corrosive gel.

  • The five major problems relating to liquid cooling systems are:
  • Corrosion
  • Cavitation-erosion
  •  Scale deposits
  • Green-goo or drop-out
  • Leaks

Antifreeze additives get too concentrated in the coolant, then the excess phosphate and/or silicate would “drop-out” of the coolant. These “drop-out” problems cause premature water pump failures, radiator blockages, heatsink cooling problems and must be cleaned and the coolant replaced with distilled water and coolant.  The Dex Cool product breaks down plastic seals so this is not a solution.

Thx for the great info and nice to hear about the R1 being that dependable 9 years is great, I always had good luck with Dell, it was my first box and still have it collecting dust, bought it in 99

It's an Asetek OEM Liquid-Cooler . Alienware has been using Asetek coolers for about 10 years now. Most companies like Corsair also use Asetek-technology. It's about as good as it gets for sealed liquid-coolers.

Yes, reportedly ... some fail or get gummed-up. Remember, there are hundreds of thousands if not millions of units in the field.

However, the (older style) Asetek liquid-cooler in my Aurora-R1 is about 9 years old now and is still working fine. :Surprise:  :Cool:
