Aurora R9, AIO upgrade H80i v2

Noticed that during extended use I was seeing 95°C + on the cpu ( distributed computing and video encoding ) with the stock water cooling setup. Tried re-applying the thermal paste but didn't notice an improvement, tried moving the 3.5 in drive down to the bottom of the case hoping that would help the stock setup pull more cool air in. Still no dice.

Gave up and decided I was putting too much heat into such a wimpy cooler, I needed something with more surface area. Enter the h80iv2 a 49mm thick radiator vs the 23mm thick stock radiator

You can't use the push pull setup that comes with the h80iv2, their isn't enough space, but a single fan on a thicker rad is better than 2 on a thinner one.

I intended to use a ML120 Pro fan with the AIO so avoid the bios top fan check issue but was sent 2 regular ML120's. The regular ML120 trip the boot error, but the fans included with the corsair AIO work without tripping anything up during boot.

peak temps at 100% load are sitting around 80°C and due to the corsair fans being quieter, it doesn't sound like a jet engine at full load anymore!

You might try removing the CPU fan, putting the AIO in the CPU fan header, radiator fan in the top fan header, pump fan empty, and then clearing CMOS.

That was the conclusion I saw from some testing on youtube

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXnDM53-dBM

tests an h60 with the 2 fans off of a h80, and h80 with just 1 of it's fans

It's not a huge difference but better is better.

I agree the testing could've been better, but some data is better than none.

Just wanted to share another potential solution for people out there.

H80I seems like a win to me. A lot more surface area, more coolant volume.  Paired with a pro series fan with over 20 more CFM compared to the SP series. Do doubt quieter with better efficiency it would seem. Thanks for Sharing

Wow! Good info. I'm glad to learn this. I guess for Corsair ML120 it must be Pro then.

For you air-cooling to liquid-cooling conversion, Grafton1046, what is powering your liquid pump? Is it the little black connector next to the 4-pin top case fan connector on the motherboard? The official Corsair mounting guide isn't very clear on where to plug in the liquid cooler connectors.

Your installation seems like an excellent job! Very well done!

"I have seen another thread here recently where the Corsair SP Series fan included with the H60 AIO cooler did not throw the BIOS startup error."

As an aside I've never experienced a startup error with the sp120L corsair fan included with the h60 in the top fan header. I did get it with a number of Noctua fans.  I tested the sp120L in an Aurora R7 (note, the R7, 8, and 9 all share the z370 pegatron motherboard).

"tests an h60 with the 2 fans off of a h80, and h80 with just 1 of it's fans"

Note that it's not entirely an apples to apples comparison.  The h80i v2 comes with a newer and bigger asetek pump, thicker sleeved hoses, and the pipes shoot straight out of the aio block (h80) instead of being pushed out the side in a flow-restricting connector (h60).

Were you able to close the case without putting pressure on the CPU? those hoses seem super thick, and not very flexible.

The H80i v2 rad is 49 mm vs 25/27mm for the H75/60.  That makes it too thick to fit with two standard size 25mm fans.  The radiator box up top in the R9 is too small to accommodate 100mm without hitting the PSU swing arm contraption when you close the case.

Yeah, everyone I've seen installs it sideways.  The intake to the AIO on the H60/75 can be rotated so there's no pressure on the CPU. The H80i v2 tubes stick straight out of the AIO so I can see there being extra pressure on the CPU if you go that route.

See here in this model H80i the tubes stick straight out and don't rotate like in the H75 or 60.

yea, i thought thats what were all talking about here?

the rad fitment was never in question for me. it was the hose flexibility and pressure on the CPU. maybe the guy who installed it could answer? instead of shootin out guesses?

I've seen some but not many people do it with the H80 radiator and 1 fan though (like here).

January 17th, 2021 20:00

yea i can imagine those 2 AIOs are great for fitment. but not effectivity or robustness. I'm really interested in how the h80i fits and what are the drawbacks. this is the first I've seen anyone actually install it on an Alienware. most people strongly speak against it because of fitment issues, but i cant get the worm out of my head that they still think it needs to be push/pull to be effective. so are they talking about the rad fitment because they want to keep both fans? or are they talking about the hose fitment because of spacing issues.

"yea, i thought thats what were all talking about here?"

The message you had replied to (that your message appeared immediately below) was talking about the H60 so I had actually been under the mistaken impression you were asking about that until I saw your later messages.  I didn't scroll back to the first page.
