Aurora R9, Killer Control Center Update

Hello all

I noticed yesterday evening that I had a Killer Control Center update that told me to go to Killernetworking.com to get latest update so I did and downloaded and update, I restarted and noticed that the Killer Controls was not in my system tray. I have had my R9 since April last year and I have never used the Killer Controls network that came with the unit and honestly I don’t know what it’s for really. I don’t use anything Bluetooth at the moment. But I have a few question.

1. Does my Dell Support Assistant catch these kind of updates?

2. Should I keep trying on the Killernetworking.com

3. Should I go through Dell Support and download the new drivers. I have a 3 year warranty with this unit because I’m not really tech savvy with this kind of issues.

I not home with the unit right now but I will try anything suggested this evening. I’ll attach the pop up message I got yesterday as I was starting the unit up to play my game. Thanks for any advice.

I think intel bought Killer networks and is trying to kill them off.Rivet Networks now belongs to Intel .

I would recommend what I did which is to do DCH drivers via

Intel® Driver & Support Assistant (Intel® DSA)

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/detect.html

Rivet Networks has been a competitor to Intel in the NIC space for over a decade. With this acquisition, Intel can capitalize on the gaming market.

This acquisition isn’t as out of left field as it might seem. A few years back, Intel and Rivet Networks collaborated to develop the Killer Wireless-AC 1550 NIC, with Intel handling the manufacturing

other than crashing and making pc's unstable smart net and killer networking has never been good at all IMHO.

I just upgraded to the latest build, no problems...I used the Killer Uninstaller first...https://support.killernetworking.com/download/killer-uninstaller/ , then after reboot

go to this link https://support.killernetworking.com/download/killer-software-package-windows-10-1803/https://support.killernetworking.com/download/killer-software-package-windows-10-1803/

This installs latest drivers...

Download and install...after reboot you will be taken to Microsoft Store to download actual software package.

Why they do it this way is beyond me...but it works so OK.

I like it to see how much Wi-Fi traffic is tearing up the air waves in my neighborhood...

busy, busy, busybusy, busy, busy

Hope this helps your Wi-Fi adventures...

Big Thanks ! I'll give it go this evening. So basically your uninstalling then updating the new. I think I may be able to handle this.. hopefully.

Thanks again !

Its never going to be normal again.

Intel also dropped support for the RST APP

Intel Rapid Storage Technology and Intel® Optane™ Memory Applications Will No Longer Be Updated (End-of-Life Notice)

The following applications are being EOL’d (end-of-life). They will no longer be available starting with Intel® RST version 18.0 currently targeted for release in Q2 2020:

The Intel® Optane™ Memory and Storage Management Hardware Support Application will continue to be available from the Microsoft Store* to deliver monitoring and management capabilities for the Intel® RST storage subsystem. Note: The Intel® RST Driver is required to be installed before installing the application, read more here.

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000030046.html

So I presume that intel will slowly remove Rivet stuff until nobody remembers them anymore.

Thank you for your reply and information but what do I do as far as getting the Killer WiFi thing to work as normal? I have had my R9 for almost a year now and I have not had any issues with it... love it so much that I will be upgrading to the R11 hopefully sometime this spring. I have a 3 year warranty and never had to use it or call support. Any advice.. anyone?

You'll be fine, just follow the Killer Control instructions on using the uninstaller and then installing the newest update.  That is a two step process, Killer Control just installs new drivers and then you are directed to Microsoft Store to download and install the actual Killer Control software package.  I just did it and it went without any problems, so you shouldn't have any problems either.  Take your time, read all the instructions and things should go back to normal. Best of luck!

INTEL bought rivet the same way ADAPTEC bought Trantor and then discontinued all of their products.

Microsoft did the same thing to FOXPRO and then discontinued it and replaced it with ACCESS Database.

Microsoft also killed Ashton Tate DBASE by killing off MSDOS.

Microsoft has been unable to Kill Oracle Database but they did Kill Sun Microsystems and Java.

Now they are trying to Kill Adobe and have successfully killed flash.

They also have PDF print trying to kill off Acrobat Pro.

They gave up on trying to Kill Apple Iphone but they did kill Nokia.

They gave up on trying to Kill Adobe premier and Discontinued Movie Maker.

They successfully Killed Novel Networks that ran on MSDOS.

They Successfully Killed Wordperfect that ran on MSDOS.

Novell correctly switched to Linux and came up with SUSE.

Novell Linux and Oracle Database and Linux and Redhat and Ubuntu are alive and well.

Microsoft SQL server and Outlook did not kill off thunderbird.

They did Kill Netscape and AOL however.

They bought Skype and are now planning on removing that and using Microsoft Teams.

They were unable to kill Google Chrome with edge so now Edge uses the same codebase as chrome and runs on all platforms including OSX.

They were not successful in killing Firefox.

So they are now firing their browser engineers and using the GNU chrome codebase.

Once Skype is done others will not switch to teams.

But lots of older machines will be cut off from the internet.

Those persons should use Puppy Linux or Ubuntu with Libre Office.

Oracle Open office is still alive and well.

====================

Out of the frying-pan and into the fire ... comes to mind.

I think the only software I hate as much as Intel-RST is Rivet's Killer Networking enhanced driver-suite nonsense.

Doesn't help that Dell has always liked to pre-install both.

----------

Intel-RST you don't need (especially not with SSDs). Microsoft's drivers work just fine.

For Killer NICs, I just use the (leaner) Windows-10 WHQL drivers. They work fine.

Thanks to everyone ! Very interesting. I’m sure I’m not the only one with this issue. I don’t use this machine on a wifi and any Bluetooth connection and really have not even noticed this Killer WiFi program but I see where I can be of use.

Thanks again.

I sort of rambled.  My point really was that you'd be just as well off uninstalling the Killer Control Center and downloading the driver only package from Killer (whether you get it from Rivet (newer) or Dell (older)) or like Tesla mentioned using the default driver (that you would get for example if you let Windows install it clean).

I don't know which wifi card option you selected but I believe the R9 had an option for the Killer 1650 wifi 6 card, and there may have also been an option for an earlier wifi 5 15XX card too?

Anyway, you don't really need the Killer Control Center.  You can use the driver only package, for example this is the 1650 driver only package:  https://support.killernetworking.com/download/killer-drivers-installation-64bit/

The control center has had it's share of problems. One of the more well known issues was the Control Center memory leak, which has since been patched.

The control center might be useful when you're setting up your router, if you do manual channel selection for example.  There are other more advanced programs for that too like Acrylic.   I have mine set to auto channel, although I do separate out the bands in my mesh network (wifi 6 | 2.5 | 5) so I can prioritize my devices.  I actually have the wifi disabled on my Aurora, it's plugged directly into a node.

Yeah when I ordered my R9 I opted for the the best killer they had but after a couple of days I was looking at my order again and notice they did not add it so I got the step down version and I didn’t want to change everything around and canx then reorder. The sales person said that it was just as good. So I’m not sure at this point what version it is now but I will take all this advice and as soon as I can find the time get it done. I sure appreciate your feedback r72019.
