Experiencing FPS drops and thermal throttling on Dell system while gaming – any optimization tips?
Hi everyone,
I’ve been doing some gaming on my Dell system recently (mainly titles like Warzone and Hogwarts Legacy), and I’ve started noticing some performance issues that I can’t fully figure out. Initially, everything runs smoothly, but after about 20–30 minutes, I get noticeable FPS drops and the system seems to heat up quite a bit.
I’m using a setup with decent specs (i5/Ryzen equivalent, RTX 30-series GPU, 16GB RAM), so I was expecting more consistent performance. I’ve already tried lowering in-game settings, updating drivers, and closing background apps, but the issue still persists.
I’m wondering if this could be related to Dell’s thermal management, BIOS settings, or something like power profiles (like switching between balanced and performance modes). Has anyone here experienced something similar on a Dell machine?
Would really appreciate any advice on optimizing performance or keeping temperatures under control during longer gaming sessions. Thanks in advance!

I know on my older Alienware, if you leave the "balanced mode" enabled and run the GPU near 100% capacity it will get too hot and throttle. selecting Performance allows the fans to ramp up and it may get loud but should cool better. The other thing I would check is to make sure your heatsink radiator or the dust screen protecting it isn't too dirty. Same with the gpu heatsink. If none of that works I would try something like HWMonitor to see what is getting hot and trouble shoot that item.

You need to tell our users which specific "Dell system" you have there.

Thanks for the suggestion! I think I may still be using Balanced mode most of the time, so I’ll definitely test Performance mode and see if the fan behavior helps reduce throttling during longer sessions.
I’ll also check the vents and heatsinks for dust buildup since the system has been used heavily for gaming lately. HWMonitor is a great idea too — I want to identify whether the CPU or GPU is hitting thermal limits first. Appreciate the detailed advice!

Thanks for the reply, Chris.
The system I’m currently using is a Dell gaming setup with an RTX 30-series GPU, 16GB RAM, and an Intel i5/Ryzen-equivalent processor configuration. I mainly notice the issue during heavier games like Warzone, Hogwarts Legacy, and even after extended sessions on lighter titles such as Stick War Legacy.
I’m currently checking whether the issue is related to Dell thermal profiles, BIOS settings, or power management behavior under sustained load. I’ve also been comparing optimization tips shared by gaming communities and sites like stickwarmods, where some users suggested tweaking performance modes and monitoring background processes during gaming sessions.
I’ll share the exact model details shortly so troubleshooting can be more specific. Thanks again!

@tahirmehmoode2eea4 I'm not sure what an Intel i5/Ryzen-equivalent processor configuration is, but it sounds like it might be air cooled by the tiny pancake fan . . . as opposed to AIO liquid cooled. If so, that would be a major source of your thermal issues. Additionally, 32GB (2x16GB) of RAM is generally recommended for gaming.
