Upgraded from Area-51 R2 to R4, cabling issues

Hello everybody,

I recently upgraded my Alienware Area-51 R2 to R4. Very happy with the upgrade but I'm having some issues figuring out the which ports connect on the motherboard connect to which ports on the I/O board.

Currently, these ports are empty on my motherboard:

11. low pin count debug header (LPC1)

12. USB connector (USB2)
13. LED Power Switch (PANEL1)

14. USB connector (USB1)

And these ports on I/O:

3. left theater-lighting connector (POGO_IN_L1)

5. USB connector (USB1)

6. debug connector (DEBUG1)
7. front I/O control connector (FIO_PWR1)

I have found the name of these ports off of the R4 manual.

If anyone knows what port connects to what or the part number of the cables, please share. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.R4 MotherboardR4 MotherboardI/O boardI/O board.

Thank you

'No Instance of an Object' tends to mean the Alien F/X FIO board isn't connected to mthrbrd by a USB cable. R2 uses classic USB & Front Panel internal cables (5x5 10pin or 9pin + 1 blocked off), while R3/R4* etc use a new proprietary USB & Front Panel cable, they are or were available from Dell (call or chat w/ Dell Spare Parts), or run the part #'s through eBay/google

*R5 R6 R7 etc, witrh Chassis 2.0 should have a different newer FIO board & perhaps has different part #'s for the FrtPnl / USB cables ... (maybe yes / maybe no)

For FIO:

1) Debug is / stays empty

2) Purchase 0NX92 & run it from mthrbrd to FIO USB1

3) Purchase 27J7M, run it from mthrbrd to FIO_Pwr1

4) POGO_IN_L1 (pic, below)(pic2, below) check your case for a Red Org Ylw Grn cable, it should be for the left door panel striker, see google W691V

Are all your cables connected?

if so, those extra ports are kinda pointless because all the cables are already connecting and if you have any remaining PCIe slots brackets left? Those can be used to add usb expansion cards to your computer and enable more functionality.

No, not all of them. The cables that come with the R2 motherboard are too short for the R4 one. I'm getting errors when I boot and can't open the command centre as it crashes with an error saying the object could not be found, so can't change any of the lights.

The only thing that I have managed to get it running really is the power button.

As for the PCIe slots, only one is used, the R4 comes with plenty of ports at the motherboard so I'm good with that, but now I can't use the DVD-RW drive, front USB, or change any of the RGB lights.

@Cass-Ole , Can't thank you enough mate, would call Dell today to check for those two parts. When installed, will tick as the solution.

Thanks again.

I've seen those R3/R4 proprietary cables on eBay a couple times before out of parted out systems, but I don't see any for sale now; sometimes the seller lists the part#, other times not; you can do a general R3 or R4 search there (ex. 'Area 51 R4', filter by lowest price 1st & browse all parts, & check back often). Yes Dell Parts will sell those, several owners have done the R2 > R4 swap by buying those direct

If in the event you (or someone else later) can't get them direct from Dell or on eBay etc, I believe I'd check eBay/Amazon/Newegg for a $3 'USB 3.0 to 2.0 adapter' --> the idea is to temporarily re-use the original FIO USB cable & get the adapter & plug into the USB 3.0 port (plug the original FIO USB 2.0 cable into the R4's 3.0 port, using the adapter), then you can install CmndCntr etc, change lights etc & wait it out until you can get the cable from somewhere or someone ... your front USB ports won't work of course if you try this, but it'd get the FIO board / AlienF/X in action at least

@Cass-Ole ,

I contacted Dell and they won't sell me the cords unless I pay $200 for a technician to come and install them with a new I/O board, honestly annoyed as.

As suggested, would be now be checking eBay constantly to see if I would be lucky.

Meanwhile, I will try to source them from a third party. If I manage to find them I will update this.

Thanks again for your help.

An unwillingness to sell u a part direct, may be the product of the person whom u worked with. My suggestion is to do both of these every other day this week until u find an employee willing to sell the cable: call Dell by phone & chat w/ Spare Parts

Tip: 1st inquire if the parts / cables are in fact in stock / available ... also, jot down the employee name(s) of those unwilling to sell direct to u & avoid them in future contacts w/Dell.

Those cables should be sold direct every day of the week w/out any strings attached, so keep trying til u find a sales person by phone or chat

UPDATE:

dealing with Dell's spare part sales was a nightmare. I had to call numerous times to finally get the cables. As you said persistence was the only thing that helped me, had to pull a Karen and threaten to contact the corporate department at the end to get them to sell those cables(not proud).

Dell USA, on the other hand, was exceptionally helpful but couldn't sell them to me as I live in Australia.

@Cass-Ole , you have been exceptionally helpful even though you are doing this voluntarily. If you ever come down to Adelaide, let me know, beers on me.

Update 1.2:

Courtesy of Reddit user @dimitry_Orlov , who has managed to fully upgrade his Area 51 R2 case with new components with fully functioning RGB and front panel buttons.

When asked how, he said, "I turned off all compatibility with bios in uefi settings CSM included, then installed Alienware CC with no issues and no regedit patch required".

I personally cannot reach him to verify.

He provided links to the replacement cables used for I/O board.
