X51 R?, Graphics card upgrade?
Can anybody suggest a better graphics card that will fit inside an x51? My roommate was looking at an NVIDIA GTX 1660 or RTX 2060. Windows 10 Graphics Card: NVIDIA Geforce GTX745 Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-6400 CPU @ 2.70GHz RAM: 16.00 GB System Type: 64Bit Power: 180W

At a minimum you need to update Power Supply to the 330W brick (DA330PM111, XM3C3, ADP-330AB B, 5X3NX, 332-1432)
The one card that will work without ANY upgrade is the GT1030 GDDR5 card.

Then you can use SHORT version of up to GTX1050TI.

1660 RTX based card is not likely ever working due to needing newer UEFI bios.
OEM system builder Windows 10 clean install is also recommended.

Others have done GTX 1060 in R2 version. No idea what the difference is between original X51 and the R1 and the R2.
1660 and 2060 is likely NEVER an option.

Hello GreenAngel,
I'm sorry I didn't see your question earlier. I love the Alienware x51 series. I have both the R1 and R3. I can confirm that you may use a GTX 1660 Ti or 1660 Super.
Your roommate has a X51 R3 (the i5 / i7 -6##0 series Intel processors are only compatible on the X51 R3. This is good news as the power board within this (R3) chassis allows for better usage of the power being delivered from the external power supply, R3>R2>R1. Users have been able to get away with GTX 1070 (150Watts vs 120Watts in 1660 Ti) in the R3. However, as another pointed out, your room-mate will absolutely require the 330 Watt power supply, which can easily be found on e-bay or dells website.
Importantly, I would advise that he go with the PNY 'blower' graphics card that is designed to expel heat out of the rear of the case, this will allow for better cooling within the X51 due to its narrow space.
