X51 R2 boot issues - Legacy and Uefi
Hi all,
Having some strange boot issues with my X51 R2. To cut a long story short:-
:- I updated to windows 10 from 8 a few months ago, making use of the free upgrade, (I think I installed this whilst the bios was set to LEGACY boot mode)
:- I also upgraded the GPU, Ram and HDD to an SSD.
Everything seemed to be ok for a couple of months until very recently I started getting this error regarding boot order. (Image below) Even though i've triple checked. it IS in the correct order.
I switch over to UEFI boot mode to see if that fixed it, it did stop showing this error but would get stuck on the Boot screen with the Alien head. I then went back to BIOS and enabled Secure Boot. It now Boots perfectly without getting hung. EXCEPT i am occasionally getting this error about the RTC being reset. I can bypass it by hitting F1 and everything loads just fine. But it comes back every so often which is a bit annoying
i've already changed the CMOS battery so wondering if anyone knows what I need to do? Could this be because I installed Windows 10 in legacy but now using UEFI? Maybe I should do a fresh install?
Could the LEGACY boot order error be due to a windows update?
What do you all think?
P

normally if you install win 10 in legacy but switch bios to UEFI it would fail to boot immediately. This is consistent with getting stuck on boot screen. You can try a clean install of OS with bios in UEFI mode. Insert bootable usb containing Windows 10 installation media, power on pc and press F12 immediately choose the usb from UEFI category then proceed to wipe ssd and clean install OS.

thanks red,
I will try a fresh install over the weekend.
Though this RTC (real time clock issue) i've noticed it wont do it on shutdown/reboot/restart and normal operation. BUT if you shutdown, unplug the power brick, plug back in, then turn the PC back on. It will give the RTC error everytime. 100% repro case.
Its basically seems that whenever the power brick unplugged something is going wrong and you see the RTC error on the next subsequent time you boot.
I've replaced the cmos and still doing it so not sure what else it could be, any ideas? This seems like an issue that will persist whether I reinstall windows or not.

cmos battery is bad. If you replace it with a brand new cr2032 and no change, the new battery is not able to keep power on the bios chip which suggests motherboard circuit issue. If so, but motherboard still boots, just keep power cord plugged in all the time. electronics does degenerate like an old car but it still has some life left.

yes I feared as much, well im buying some more Cr2032 just to rule out this battery being a bad one. As you said if still happening after that It must be something on the mobo. Maybe a bad capacitor? is it easy to debug if so?

Does the Bios time actually become inaccurate?
Is your system time accurate and using the correct time zone?
Does that system have a boot diagnosis option?
If you could get a disk management picture of your drives, it may help regarding the UEFI or not situation.

@Parmageddonz
Don't throw the old cmos battery away because its a battery with wires so you cut off the wires and solder to battery holder for DL2032 or get the actual Battery 0J313 which is hard to find now.

This is why you keep the bad battery

not easy to do. I would just keep it plugged in power. I have seen motherboard that still boots keep saying checksum error after new battery and clear cmos. I consider it a nuisance. It is slightly defective and not 100% functional but still has 99% left.
