Alienware 14 speaker/sound quality

I recently bought an Alienware 14 and it arrived this week, everything about it is awesome except for the speakers. Half the time they run correctly and the sound quality is great but the other half it sounds as if they're only half working and the quality of the sound is really bad. I can fix this by plugging in headphones and not selecting the headphone option. It fixes the audio quality but I don't want to do this every time. Is there a way to fix it or are my speakers broken? I tried reinstalling the drivers and it hasn't fixed it.

Hi djbummy,

I am sorry for the inconvenience. I suggest that you uninstall the audio drivers, restart the system and install the driver in the order given below:

  1. BIOS : http://dell.to/17ICtIv
  2. Chipset: http://dell.to/1bAkfgf
  3. Audio : http://dell.to/1gg1IoV

Note: Restart the system after each driver update.

In case the issue persists even after the drivers update, I request you run diagnostics. Please click on the link below:

http://dell.to/11GelRo

Under ‘Symptom’ from the listed components under ‘Diagnostic Selector’ select ‘No Sound’ and then click on ‘Run Diagnostics’. Follow on screen instruction to run the test and reply to this post with the status to assist you further.

Hello Sujatha,

The solution you provided did not work. My all drivers are up to date. and the diagnostics tool is just a waste. I am still facing the same problem. Any other solution to this?

You have 30 days to return the laptop as "unfit for purpose" and I suggest you do so. Doesn't matter whether it is a hardware or software problem. A brand new machine should work correctly out of the box, PERIOD. I get so frustrated when I see people reinstalling this or that on a brand new computer. The only way Dell will ever improve Quality Control / Testing is if the number of returns starts to increase, then the bean counters will eventually notice and do something about it. Do not let the 30 day window slip away while you waste time reinstalling drivers or other nonsense.

Hi Saumil,

Can you confirm if the problem also happens when you use a headset or external speakers?

I hear loud sound like it should come when i connect my headsets/external speakers and don't select the option. If i dont connect anything, I hear low sound as if something is preventing power to the speakers. I have the latest drivers and BIOS. Please help me out with this problem or fix the bug.

I just got this laptop a month ago and am having this issue now? Are there any other solutions than replacing the speakers in the laptop?

My laptop is doing the same thing. It plays loud for some games, then it gets dim. Like 50%. Then it will switches up. The game that is playing normal goes 50% then the game that was 50% sound is now full sound. its just a mess!
