Dell Alienware 17 R4 Restart Problem

Hello, I have recently bought a Dell Alienware 17 R4 (GTX 1080) laptop. However there is one strange issue-the laptop will not restart. If I press restart or I initiate the restart sequence through any software the laptop will try to restart but only to a black screen and the lights on the keyboard will be illuminated. If I completely shut down through windows or power button, the laptop will power on without any problems. I would appreciate any help.Thank you!

Hello, yes it has started recently. I cannot update BIOS since BIOS needs to restart the computer which obviously is the problem here. It only happens when restarting the computer. Turning it on from a powered off state will power on fine.

Hi tuxedo187‌,

It was like this since the day you got it? or this started recently?

Make sure you have the latest BIOS version and to run any missing Windows update.

If this started recently you can try a system restore:

Restore from a system restore point

This option takes your PC back to an earlier point in time, called a system restore point. Restore points are generated when you install a new app, driver, or Windows update, and when you create a restore point manually. Restoring won’t affect your personal files, but it will remove apps, drivers, and updates installed after the restore point was made.

  1. Select the Start  button, type control panel and then choose it from the list of results.
  2. Search Control Panel for Recovery.
  3. Select Recovery > Open System Restore > Next.
  4. Choose the restore point related to the problematic app, driver, or update, and then select Next > Finish.
Note

If you’re not seeing any restore points, it might be because system protection isn’t turned on. To check, go to the Control Panel, search for Recovery, and then select Recovery > Configure System Restore > Configure and make sure Turn on system protection is selected.

You can also try a clean boot, here is an article that will show you how to do it.

I will add SSD and completely wipe the laptop, then reinstall everything to ssd (currently the laptop has only the standard hdd). Will see how it goes.

Well, try the system restore then. Also try to update the video driver.

Sounds like it's locking-up or crashing during Shut-Down.

Obviously, it should not be doing that. Great, yes try a complete reformat and clean-Windows install (Nuke and Pave).

Okay, so the SSD did not help. I have tried to update the BIOS from inside the BIOS, however when i use the Dell Driver Flash tool i get up to this point:( Imgur: The most awesome images on the Internet  ) and then it instantly turns off, tries to restart to this screen: Imgur: The most awesome images on the Internet  and just sits on this screen.  I have noticed that if i put the computer to sleep it gets stuck on that screen with lights on as well. The computer operates normally after shutting down, the restart and sleep is affected. What could be the cause?

I have done the complete reformat and reinstall to no avail. Its strange because the computer shuts down fine and then you can turn it on, but restart or sleep will get it stuck on black screen...

I have similar issue with Alien 13 R3, (GTX 1050). Started right out of the box, first time I turned it on. Mine has issue's from cold start and from restart.

First time I turned it on the fans went full force and only the keyboard and Alien head lit up but nothing on the screen for about 3 minutes. I later discovered it would sometimes take 3 minutes to boot up only having the keyboard lit. And Sometimes still on a cold start up the fans will run full force and and only keyboard will light up for about 3 minutes.

Bios has been updated, Dell tech support checked it out, ran hardware scan and passed, reinstalled Windows and all the drivers and still same issue.

They're sending me out a replacement.

It's not normal, if you can I would return it for another or send it in for repair.

Okay so today i have disconnected the battery, disconnected the CMOS battery, let it rest for one minute and then back on - no result, still the same. I ran DELL diagnostics and all test were fine. There is one thing though - when i save and exit in BIOS (F10) the computer turns off, then after few seconds i get 2 RED light flashes on the power button and then after few seconds it restarts. So it basically restarts in BIOS, however it gives those 2 red flashes prior to doing so. Any suggestions?

Thank you for your response. My cold boot is fine, just the sleep and restart forces the laptop to not boot. However I do not have warranty for it, so sending to Dell is not an option...

I have uploaded 2 videos on Youtube, so here is the laptop restarting and hanging: https://youtu.be/hPAQrimqMqs and here is a video of BIOS save and exit, you see the pattern, it turns off, then on, then a couple of red flashes, then off and on again, then it boots: https://youtu.be/mVumn69sJKA

If this is the latest 17 model, the system should have warranty. Send me a private message with the service tag so I can check.
