Upgrading the graphics card on my Alienware m18x

So I bought an alienware about half a year ago from newegg. It came with a gtx 560m and an i-7 2670qm quadcore. Now, my CPU I'm pretty sure is fine for a while, but that gtx 560m is definitely holding back my performance. I was looking into getting a gtx 675m, or the new gtx 680m, called customer support asking about it and was basically told that they don't carry those parts, which is just wrong. I thought I would ask here, is it possible for me to send my alienware laptop in to have the gpu upgraded, paying either for the new card entirely or the difference between the two. If i had known the gtx 680m was coming, I probably would have just waited the half a year and purchased it built in. If anyone can shed some light on this, I'd appreciate it.

Alienware does not upgrade the computers they have sold, so there is no mail in and get upgrades. Now you can watch ebay for for the specific graphics card you are wanting, but know that Alienware will not support your new card unless it was an option that has already been validate on the M18X. It is possible to use one of the cards you mentioned.

Well that's unfortunate. Anyone have any recommendations on where I can buy cards then? I can put it in myself I'm pretty sure. There is one gtx 680m on ebay for like 1200, which is ludicrous to me, though there are also some gtx 675m's there for a bit under 500. I'm not sure if those are decent prices or if there is anywhere else I could look?

Hello tehxdemixazn,

The Nvidia 680m is not available for upgrades yet but it will become available soon. If you are still interested, send an e-mail to AWupgrades@Dell.com and I will keep you on a list and will let you know whenever we have an update on that. If you have questions about other parts for upgrades, add them to that e-mail and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.

Thank you

your best bet is eBay to be honest ! i would look for a set of 580's in SLI you cant go wrong with them to be fair and you will find a lot people selling them to get the newly released 680's

580's in SLI will get you some awesome FPS in alot of current games and many in the future without problems

Thank you very much for letting me know, and I'll be sure to do just that.

I have the SLI 580 and I get 60+ FPS on almost every game with all settings maxed out, even on Crysis 2 with the High Definition Textures.

My only hope is it can handle Crysis 3 :)
