M14x and Black Ops 2
I am having an issue with BO2. It could be game related but it is hard to tell at this point.
After much frustration I got the game to run using the required NVIDIA beta driver 310.54. For the first few days the game ran perfect on extra high settings. getting 90-120 FPS. A few days ago the game randomly started having frame drops to to around 10-30 fps. Minimizing and returning to fullscreen seams to fix the issue temporary for a few full matches. I am assuming this may be a graphics leak within the game or maybe the beta driver is unstable?
Any thoughts or test to make sure it is not my GPU/CPU?
rerolling to a previous driver or even the most current official driver is not an option due to the game requires the beta driver to run.
I5-2430 @ 2.40
RAM 8GB
64-bit Windows 7
GPU 555m 3GB

As a side note, my temps never rise more than 63C when playing BO2. Temps drop to 58C shortly after the frame drop issue. I also checked my gpu usage and it also drops to arund 30% or less when the frame rates drop.

Hi Slate001,
1. Test other games to check if this issue is happening with intensive video applications in general or just this one game.
2. Perform a Clean Boot to determine if there's a program running on the background causing the FPS drops.
3. Re-install the graphics card driver following the steps in this article:
Optimus Units: Correct video driver install/uninstall procedure

Other games do not seam to have a problem.
Even after a clean boot the FPS drops
A clean reinstall of the driver does not solve the problem.

I did some more investigation and it appears that NVIDIA has released a new beta driver that someone said on Alienware Arena forums solved his issues with BO2. I installed it and played a few hours tonight and not a single frame drop. Hopefully this is the fix.

Monitor the temps while playing using GPU-Z, keep it running on the background and as soon as the FPS start dropping, close the game and check the temps, it's probably going to go down very fast so select "Max Temp" on the "GPU Temperature" drop down menu. The temps are located on the "Sensors" tab.

I'll give this a go with gpu-z, but I already monitor the GPU temps constantly when gaming with another program.
The GPU never heats up more that around 62-65C under a full load with good air flow from my cooling pad.
When I first recieved the laptop I didn't have a cooling pad and games would run near 80C with no problems
I think this is evidence that the card is not overheating/throttling.

Apparently my post did not go through when I posted a few days ago. Opps
Max temp was 66.
I also reinstalled the beta driver. And for a few hours of gaming no issues. Then fps spikes start happening randomly.
I also played the original black ops and issue only happened once or twice there over 2 or 3 hours.
While playing black ops 1 I did notice that the clocks dropped as well but I did not notice the clocks dropping yet while playing black ops 2

Try turning off the Vsync: go to the Nvidia control panel>Manage 3D Settings>Global Settings, scroll down, one of the last options is Vsync or Vertical Sync and select "off" or "force off" on the drop down menu. Test the game without it and let me know.

Sorry for the delay but I have been quite buzy this week. I already had this setting turned off within the game. Nvidia was set to use the games settings for vsync. Will this make a difference? Hopefully I have time to test this tonight.

No massive frame drops after playing for a few hours but slight frame drops into the 40-50 range still occurs. Game played flawless for at least 2 hours before issue began, heat max is still 66C
