X51 GTX 660 overclock and temperature help needed!
Hello all I'm new to forum and no big tech head but I get the basics, anyway here is my predicament.
I got my nice shiny new Alienware X51 about two months ago and well I love it, It easily runs all my games on max settings with everything enabled at 1080p although aliasing must be set to x2 for a constant over 40 fps. These games including:-
Bioshock infinite +50 FPS
Arma 3 Alpha +40 FPS
Battlefield 3 +60 FPS
Skyrim with over 30 mods including Real Vison +50 FPS
Tomraider +40 FPS
(All the above are before overclock)
I was more than happy till one particular game was released which is Metro Last Light, I enabled everything including advanced physics but had to lose aliasing all together. The game was dropping below 40 FPS but never below 30 FPS, it is more than playable but I want over 40 FPS constantly. So i decided to overclock I used EVGA X Precision with the below settings
Power Target +140%
GPU Clock Offset +140
MEM Clock Offset +580
Voltage 1000 mV
All seams stable, no crashes or graphic anomalies I also ran Metro Last light benchmark everything maxed and enabled apart from aliasing and ran it the max number of runs being 99. Still after the benchmark of 99 runs it's fine and there is a dramatic improvement in frames both in game and benchmarking.
I think the benchmark is much more demanding than the game tho as in game it seems even faster well feels it anyway as there never is slow down even in demanding bits including the slow motion.
The problem I have tho is the GPU temp it seems to idle at 42 oC and when playing metro goes as high as 85 oC, are these temps acceptable and should I be using the software automatic fan control option with a custom fan speed preset?
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated

If i were you if you use MSI Afterburner use a custom fan profile or the 660 with downclock.

nvidia's product page lists the gtx 660's max temp as 97C www.geforce.co.uk/.../specifications
that being said, 85 is high but you are overclocking it. Are you setting a fan speed curve with precision X? i have mine set so that it keeps the temps at 80 tops at stock speeds and the fan speed tops out around 69%

I'd be interested to know how stable this stays, I'd agree with aiming to keep it under 80 degs if possible (I use an MSI Afterburner custom fan curve and I've not OC'd mine)

So what is the difference between afterburner and precision or is it just user preference? I have updated to 320.18 WHQL driver and all seems stable still.
I'm keen to know what custom fan curve settings people are using as some people use them and some just leave it on auto.

just user preference in all honesty. auto fan settings is good enough for the card but not as great as it could be. i read somewhere it should be somewhere close to a 1:1 ratio in terms of fan speed % to temp (around 50% fan speed when at 50C)
personally i have mine set to lowest fan speed from 30-50 and then have it curve up to 69% at 80C which works fine for me

I'm not at my X51 at the minute, but I have it set so it never really goes over 75 degs. Suits me fine.
User preference of temp vs noise really :)

I would just leave it automatically and check on the temperatures during gaming, if they get too high then you will probably have to do a curve with MSI afterburner to raise the fan speed a bit.
