13 R2, screen turning black during boot and randomly after

I have an Alienware 13 R2 that was working just fine until a couple days ago.  Now when you try to turn it on the screen flashes the Alienware logo then goes black.  The backlight is still on.  If you connect it to an external HDMI monitor the monitor shows the screen just fine.  I tried searching and found posts from a couple years ago suggesting that the Intel HD 520 graphics may be the issue.  At first I had everything updated.  Then I uninstalled the device and removed the drivers from within device manager.  I installed some older HD 520 drivers that were released in 2017.  Now the desktop will show if you're not touching the computer.  But when you start using it (like moving the mouse around) the screen will go black.  And as soon as you stop it will show up again.  I've updated the Nvidia drivers.  I've gone into Nvidia control panel and in the 3D settings switched from the "Let Windows decide" to always using Nvidia GPU.  I've updated the computer.  I've tried to reset the computer, but the moment you try to go to the reset area the screen goes black and won't output to an external monitor.
