17 R1, fans ramp up 100% then stop
Alienware 17 R1, runs fine for a while, then fans ramp up all the way, then stop. Laptop then overheats and shuts down. Does it when under load like gaming or just sitting there doing nothing. Taken it apart, cleaned it, brand new thermal paste. I'm a bit of a techie, old roommate got me into it. I've tried everything I could think of.

This sounds like the standard issue with Support Assist on these older systems. If you SA installed then you need to go to 'Uninstall a program' and go right through the list and uninstall any programs that mention Support Assist. There are usually 3 that you have to remove to completely get rid of it. Try this and see if the issue goes away.
Only removing 1 or 2 of the programs won't usually fix the issue.
