17 R2, how to connect docking station?

@brucefu  Regular USB 3.0 does not support native video output, so the only ways to run displays from USB 3.0 ports are with "indirect display" dongles that rely on technology such as DisplayLink -- not to be confused with DisplayPort -- and that comes with some drawbacks that can be significant in certain use cases, especially gaming.  I wrote about those in the post marked as the answer in this thread.  If you want a docking station, I would suggest using a Thunderbolt dock instead.  Thunderbolt carries native video along with PCIe (which can carry USB), so it will likely be a better fit for your purposes given that you have an Alienware system.  Note however that you will likely not be able to charge your system at all from its USB-C/Thunderbolt port, even with a dock that can provide power, because the Alienware 17 requires more power than can currently be carried over USB-C/Thunderbolt.  A recent update to the spec allowed up to 240W to be carried, but I have not seen that implemented in any laptops or docks actually on the market yet.
