17 R3, freezes on startup

Hi.

I have an Alienware 17 R3. Laptop freezes within seconds of booting into OS. I've tried this on Windows 10 and Linux and same thing. Same with Reinstalling. Problem has been ongoing for years. There is one thing that makes the problem go away entirely, having something plugged into the USB C port. It can be anything like an HDD or monitor but it has to be something and it can't be just a cable going nowhere. I would appreciate any ideas or suggestions. I can't find any identical stories online.

Cheers!

Hi AlienAI welcome to this free user-to-user Alienware laptop discussion forum.

When Alienware 17 R3 (9/16/2015) laptop has booted into the windows operating system, please run the Windows Reliability Monitor. How to use Windows Reliability Monitor to identify software issues | Dell US. Wait for event timeline to be created. Open Reliability Monitor and compare events with no USB-C and with USB-C connected. Open event for no USB-C connected and it should say why operating system did not boot and give Microsoft error code.  Please share reason operating system did not boot and the Microsoft error code. Thank you.

@crimsom thanks for the idea!

I have been running Linux only for the past year or so and therefore can't generate that log unfortunately.  I've taken a look at the logs I have and there's no particular even registered. I might be missing something though and it may be worth installing windows to run diagnostics then!

Hi AlienAI thank you for sharing update.

The Alienware 17 R3 Drivers & Downloads (including BIOS) does not support Linux only. How to Install Ubuntu Linux on your Dell Computer | Dell US. Have you considered dual boot? How to install Ubuntu alongside Windows 10 (Dual Boot) - Linux Tutorials - Learn Linux Configuration. Advocate that you should clone (copy) your OS(C:) boot drive before trying to install dual boot, just in case there is an unrecoverable problem.
