17 R3, problems with booting/battery/AC adapter
Hi,
I've been having issues with my Alienware 17 R3. The warranty expired on July 20, 2017. At first when I would charge the battery, it would not reach 100% capacity. Slowly over the past few months, it would not even charge and I would get "the battery power is critical" messages on boot up.
I bought a replacement battery a few days ago and I was able to boot into Windows, however the batter started to drain, so I put the AC adapter and could see the icon in the bottom right of the screen showing that the AC adapter was charging. About 30 minutes later, the batter died.
I tried some suggestions on the forum, like removing the battery and holding the power button down for 30 seconds to do a drain, but this did not help. I also noticed that the laptop does not turn on with the battery removed and the AC adapter plugged in.
I am not sure what the problem is, if the AC adapter is faulty, then why would it show the connected icon? Could it be the battery, even if I bought a new one?
I can't even boot up anymore as it turns off after 15 seconds.
Any help is appreciated.

Hi @Jay3l welcome to this user to user discussion forum. This is not Dell Support.
Please remove rear panel and disconnect the battery.
Note ac adapter's dc cord's diagnostic LED colour, then plug into laptop, does LED colour or its behaviour change.
Press start button, does POST give any diagnostic lights or beeps.
If system Boot is successful, the battery should be replaced. Laptop without battery, will happily function as a desktop.
To check battery, look at white label, beneath the square matrix, there will be a year/month date, e.g. 2021/03. Battery date should be less than six months old when it is delivered.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply, I removed the rear panel and disconnected the battery, the AC Adapter's cord LED colour is blue when I plug into the laptop, it does not change colour, it remains blue.
I cannot boot if I press the power button, nothing happens, only when the battery is connected I get about 15 seconds of power before it turns off.
I checked the date of the replacement battery I purchased from eBay...
Should I send it back? When I first got it, the laptop booted to windows but the battery drained after 30 minutes, even with the AC adapter plugged in.
Do you know of any place that sells new in-date battery for Alienware 17 r3?

Hi @Jay3l thank you for sharing update complete with image.
Your battery's white label says it is Dell Part Number, DP/N 07DWMT which is a Dell 9-Cell 97WHr Battery for Precision M4600 with manufacturer's date of 2016/10. Although your battery physical appearance looks like the correct battery, its label is from a different battery and more than three years old. This is fraudulent.
When new battery delivered it should be less than six months old. If battery is a recent eBay purchase and more than six months old, it should be rejected and returned immediately as being not fit for purpose. You use your eBay account to send message to vendor, so that eBay has a record and eBay protection kicks in, when you request a new replacement battery or a full refund. Vendor pays for return of rejected item.
Not sure in which part of the world you reside, if in the US, a suitable vendor is Here. Search online for Alienware 17 R2 / R3 OEM Original replacement 8-cell Laptop Battery 92Wh - DP/N 6JHDV - with one year warranty.
Back to the status of your 17 R3 system. When the ac adapter is connected to the laptop, its internal memory chip checks that laptop has a valid Dell battery, and battery charging will commence. Your check of the dc power cord's diagnostic LED says that the ac adapter is fully functonal. Laptop with no battery is designed to happily function as a Desktop. You have checked and discovered your 17 R3 with battery disconnected, does not function as Desktop. The brief POST does not provide any diagnostic lights or beeps.
It seems that the laptop's DC-IN socket has a fault. Please have a good look into the socket opening to see if it has been damaged or has a foreign object. Considering the age of the 17 R3, the socket may show signs of normal wear, and have a very loose contact with the ac adapter's plug. Adjusting the socket's grip on its plug may be possible or install a replacement Alienware 17 R3 DC Power Input Jack Plug with Cable, DP/N 6RPMJ. Please watch video to determine if you or another person has the skills to replace this item.
