17 R3, stuck on Logo for 60 seconds before Windows boot

I have an Alienware "17 R3" that, during bootup, gets stuck on Alienware logo screen for more than 60 seconds before finally starting to boot Windows. I found some information recently, that said to disconnect the battery and try booting off of the power supply only.  When I did that, the problem disappeared. Now I'm trying to figure out how to actually resolve the issue, so I can have it work this way when the battery is actually connected. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi @pungo120 welcome to this free user to user Alienware laptop discussion forum. This is not Dell Support.

Thank you for a good opening post. Guess the Alienware 17 R3 is now having the normal problem of an old battery retaining a low charge capacity compared to its high design capacity. Please create windows Battery Report Windows 10 Battery Report: What It Is And How to Use It (lifewire.com)

For the typical user, noticeable reduction in run time generally will be observed after 18 to 24 months. For a power user, reduction in run time generally may be experienced within 18 months. Dell recommends buying a new OEM laptop battery when the run time does not meet your needs. Dell Laptop Battery - Frequently Asked Questions | Dell US

The new OEM replacement Alienware 17 R2 / R3 Original 8-cell Laptop Battery 92Wh is DP/N 6JHDV. Getting a good OEM replacement battery is getting difficult. Advocate purchase from Amazon, eBay, etc. that provide additional purchase protection. Always check that battery has white label with correct DP/N, and that manufacture year/month date beneath square matrix is less that 6 months old. If check fails, return defective battery in accordance with additional purchase protection, for full refund.

@crimsom According to the Windows Battery Report, the battery still "appears" to be in good health.  It's showing that actual capacity is very close to design capacity.  95.31Wh (actual) vs 96.0 Wh (design).  Do you still think this might be the issue?  The laptop is pretty old at this point.  More than 7 years to be exact.  However, I never use the laptop on battery power.

Hi @pungo120 thank you for sharing additional information.

Battery Report says the more than 7 years old battery is in exceptional good health. The Alienware 17 R3 must have a different issue that delays launch of the Windows 10, 64-bit Operating System.

Where is your OS(C:) boot drive? Is it on the slow SATA HDD or SSD in the 2.5" drive bay, or on the fast or ultrafast M.2 PCIe Gen3.0 x4 NVMe SSD in one of the M.2 Slots?

Please run windows Reliability Monitor and wait for event timeline to load. As the delay to launch the Windows operating system regularly occurs, look for event that is reported every day during windows boot. How to use Windows Reliability Monitor to identify software issues | Dell US The event should state the root cause of the delayed launch of the operating system.

Hi @pungo120,

Try doing a flea power drain by hard shutting down the laptop by holding the power button until it shuts off, then disconnecting the battery from the motherboard and holding the power button again for 30 seconds.

Afterwards just let go of the power button and reconnect the battery to the board and try booting again.

@pungo120  Can you try running the ePSA diagnostic with the battery plugged in just to see if it picks up any hardware issues. During POST, press F12 to enter the Boot Menu. Select the Diagnostic from here. I'd suggest to run the additional memory tests once the main test is completed. It can take some time though.

Hi @pungo120  thank you for sharing that Alienware 17 R3 is almost always used on ac adapter power.

Can you recall if the 60 seconds delay before Windows boot has always been there, or if it suddenly appeared after a Windows Update, Dell Update, Install new application, install new drive, install new peripheral device, etc.?

@mattyb3 I did run that already and all of the tests passed.

This issue started a long time ago (i.e. probably a year or so at least).  I don't recall if it happened all of the sudden after an update or install or if it slowly happened over time.

@Alienware Area-51 ALX 2006 I don't think that's the issue!  That driver is already up to date, plus, the issue happens before Windows starts to load, where that driver would actually be loaded in the first place.  It's getting hung up before you start to see the spinning circle of dots, which indicates Windows is actually booting.

Hi @pungo120 thank you for sharing this issue.

The OS(C:) boot drive should be a fast M.2 NVMe SSD that has GPT (not MBR) partition format so that boot list option UEFI is enabled for rapid/secure boot. The OS(C:) drive should always have a large empty space so that temporary files can be quickly unpacked during windows boot and ready for prompt use. Over time it is easy to forget and the system gets slower over time.

Where is, and What is the free status of your OS(C:) boot drive?

Hi @pungo120 ,

Did you see the video I linked?

I did my research and the KIONIX FREEFALL Sensor is a program that loads before windows even boots and if it detects that the laptop is about to hit the ground it shuts off all drives in the computer to prevent damage.
