17 R4, 2080 Ti, AGA, not working

Equipment/Software =

Alienware 17 R4 Laptop

New AGA (Alienware Graphic Amplifier)

New Nvidia GeForce 2080 Ti in AGA

Windows 10

Bios 15 updated

Problem: AGA only works very briefly then get windows error code in device manager =

“Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)”

HDMI nor DisplayPort output does not work on AGA
Graphic Amp USB ports work

Tried thus far:

1) Updated Bios
2)  Installed latest GeForce Driver
3). Installed Alienware Graphic Amp software
4) Windows completely update.
5). Uninstall Card and reinstall GA software and GeForce drivers, Device manager indicates all is good until I plug in a display to the HDMI port, then it craps out and windows error code appears
5) Completed deleted all drivers and related software and reinstalled, same issue, Device manager showed connected then it craps out when I try to plug in a display
6). Graphic Amp is present in Alienware Command Center App
7) Have tried 2 different displays and Oculus Rift, HDMI does not work.  Just very briefly works.  One time entire laptop locked when I opened the NVIDIA program.

Looking for a solution.  Thanks

Hi @arbour2,

Are you installing the driver of the onboard video card? Remember that's the driver that must be installed.

Also, this could be related to a problem with the NVIDIA GeForce 2080 TI.

The existing onboard Video Card is a GTX 1080, I updated the driver for that card. But the GA has the GTX 2080 TI it is listed as a 2nd Graphic Card under “Windows Device Manager”. I updated that driver as well, several times. This is the one the is crapping out with the error message. The card is brand new, so I do not have any idea if it is defective or if there is another issue. I do not have any spare cards laying around to try in the Graphic Amp.

@arbour2,

Disconnect the AGA and try the following steps:

  1. Uninstall NVIDIA graphics driver. You can use Revo uninstaller to make sure is removed from Programs & Features, Registry files and your C Drive.
  2. Uninstall Intel graphics driver
  3. Install latest system BIOS. (Restart required)
  4. Reinstall Intel graphics driver from our website. (Restart required)
  5. Reinstall the on-board NVIDIA graphics driver. (Restart required) The driver that must be installed is the one for the onboard card not the GeForce 2080 TI.

Then, reconnect the AGA, make sure you follow the correct set up steps. The system should pick the GeForce 2080 TI but you don't have to install its driver.

Hey, I'm facing a similar issue with a slight difference. My on board gpu (GTX 1070) isn't disabled automatically by the AGA.

I have the Asus Dual RTX 2080 TI in the AGA & the AGA is connected to a 4K TV via HDMI. Under Device Manager, I see 3 GPUs :

1. Intel which is fine

2. GTX 1070 which by right shouldn't be there

3. RTX 2080 TI with code 43 error

I have tried all steps mentioned by you & the moderator but they yield no result. The command center also shows that the AGA is connected & all 3 GPUs are ON (unlike your screenshot where the on board GPU is disabled)

Have you been able to fix this ? My drivers & bios are the latest as of today & both the AGA and the card are brand new

dell does not support rtx gpus and newer drivers. power supply in the amplifier is very small.2080 ti requires a minimum of a 650 watt power supply,

“Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43) ” can occur if the device hardware fails or if the device driver fails.

Yet another reason I recommend that evga 700BR is bare miniumum for replacement power supply.

But doesn't the dell website list that the RTX 2080 TI is compatible with the AGA ?

https://www.dell.com/support/article/sg/en/sgdhs1/sln300946/alienware-graphics-amplifier-supported-graphics-card-list?lang=en

I'm wondering whether my issue is due to the fact that I'm using an Asus Dual OC RTX 2080 TI instead of using the founders edition as mentioned in the link above.

Maybe the VBIOS of the Asus card isn't compatible with my 17 R4.

Could this be an issue ?

I cannot be happier ! It works wonderfully !

So this is exactly what I did

1. Connected the amplifier and switched on my laptop

2. Windows did detect the card with an exclamation under Device Manager & prompted me to restart

3. Before the restart, I installed the desktop version of the driver for the RTX 2080 TI by downloading it manually ( when you go to download at the NVIDIA website, the card details automatically fill in which means that the card is indeed detected)

4. Do not do a clean install; an express install worked for me. After the installation, disable the on board gpu in device manager  and restart the laptop with the aga plugged in. Also, I connected the aga via hdmi to a 4K tv throughout this process

5. Upon logging in, the extended display is automatically enabled and RTX 2080 is used

It works beautifully. I’ve been playing remnant from the ashes with no issues at all.

My rig : Alienware 17 R4 i7 7700 HQ 16 Gb GTX 1070 (AGA uses the Asus Dual OC RTX 2080 TI)

Certain retail cards may have larger heatsinks, use more power and other elements that may not let them fit inside the graphics amplifier. The Alienware Graphics Amplifier is designed to fit standard size graphics cards (Reference and Founders Edition).

Certain video manufacturers may modify their video card VBIOS causing incompatibility with the graphics amplifier (Superclock, Overclock, Dual and Triple Fans).

I opened my amplifier and it has 525W power supply so that would be an issue for a 2080TI.

https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/graphics-cards/rtx-2080-ti/

Graphics Card Power 260W
Recommended System Power 650 (W)
8 pin + 8 pin Supplementary Power Connectors

The 525W power supply has 2  6 pin + 6 pin Supplementary Power Connectors

I would recommend the 850G but I do not know if it fits into the case

I reply on this old message, but i had the same issue with a geforce RTX 2080 FE on my old 17R2. After installing my card into graphic amplifier, i had a code 43 when my pc rebooted.

I tryed with this tool https://egpu.io/forums/expresscard-mpcie-m-2-adapters/script-nvidia-error43-fixer/ and that works !!!!

No again code 43 exists and my RTX 2080 is correctly used.
