17 R5, 64GB of RAM?

Samsung recently released the industry's first 32GiB SO-DIMMs, about which you can read here. The new SO-DIMMs are now available for purchase in 64GiB kits. I was wondering if the Alienware 17 R5 supports the SO-DIMMs and 64GiB of RAM. I know the CPU supports the RAM. Does Dell need to release a BIOS update or does the laptop already support 64GiB of RAM?

Thanks,

Well, it's been, uh, five years since I purchased my Dell Alienware 17 R5, and still, there's no BIOS fix for the buggy RAM timings detection which causes the laptop to eat itself when 64GB of RAM is installed.

Compuram.biz, for a while, was selling a dual channel 64GB DDR4 2133MHz kit that worked for the AW 17 R5, but they've since discontinued it although they say that the R5 can handle 48GB of RAM with their DIMMs.

I'm pretty sure Compuram.biz was taking 32GB DIMMs and either using a hardware re-programmer or something like this to change the SPD data so that the correct timings would be applied by the R5's BIOS.

So, it's probably possible to buy two 32GB DDR4 DIMMs and then use the above SPD re-programming software to set up 2133MHz timings which the BIOS will see. The same thing is probably possible with Dell's latest AW laptops, which, again, "support" only half the amount of RAM that the CPU's IMC supports.

NOTE : Some users have PMed me about 64GB of RAM on the AW R5, but the PM system seems to have gone kaput, so for @Sandpilot  @peraltamori , the answer to the question of whether one can install and boot up with 64GB of RAM on the AW 17 R5 IS "yes" with some caveats : If you can't find a RAM supplier or retailer that carries 32GB DDR4 DIMMs which have had their SPD data modified, then you'll have to do it yourself with the software I mentioned, but at the risk of bricking your RAM.

P.S. I can't seem to create paragraphs in this forum -- when I post anything all the text runs together, which wasn't the case the last time I posted here...

@jdb2

Thanks for your info. Bought 2400 mhz modules as you suggested in previous post, unfortunately no luck with booting 64gb, but single 32gb module works fine. Tried setup config flag in bios(with grub-mod-setup_var) and set maximum ram frequency to 2133 - again same story, one module boots at 2133, two modules nope. So not sure that modifying of spd to 2133 will help. Wrote to thaiphoon burner author for a license(seems no way to buy it on site), if i'll manage to buy it i'll test if spd modification will help.

Update: flashed my ram modules to 2133, unfortunately ram or notebook with such ram doesn't boot after such modification. Will wait for spd programmer from ali, will fix ram and will test some other mods for spd. But at this moment seems that there is no way to make alienware 17 r5 boot with 64gb ram.

PS: if you are one of that people that managed to launch 64gb of ram we all waiting for your success story and it would be awesome if you upload spd dumps of your ram modules(could be done with free version of Thaiphoon burner)
