Alienware M14X -R2 reinstrall operating system

Question

I have tried to wipe windows for a refresh and chose the option 'Remove Everything'.  When complete rather than opt for an installation process it presents a login page with the username and requesting a password - which has been cleared.  How can I initiate an reinstallation of the operating system?

Try an alternate USB with the Microsoft W10 iso.

because you attempted a wipe of the system, then a lack of restore points (or whatever) is not surprising.

How did you wipe the system?

What/Which OS are you using?

I would ensure that you have written down any and all passwords for the BIOS , OS etc etc.

Before you wipe

Back up anything you want to keep: documents, browser data, game saves, email archives, and license keys.
If BitLocker is enabled, save the recovery key first.
Download your Windows installer on another PC and make a bootable USB.
Have Dell chipset, graphics, audio, Wi-Fi, and touchpad drivers ready in case Windows Update misses any.

Dell notes that reinstalling Windows can fix many software issues, and their reinstall guidance includes using installation media or a Dell recovery image.

Wipe and reinstall

Plug in the AC adapter.
Insert the Windows USB installer.
Power on the laptop and tap F12 repeatedly to open the one-time boot menu.
Choose the USB device.
When Windows Setup loads, choose Custom: Install Windows only.
At the drive screen, delete all existing partitions on the target drive if you want a full wipe.
Select the unallocated space and continue the install.

BIOS settings to check

Before installing, enter BIOS with F2 and confirm:

Boot mode is set appropriately for the installer you’re using.
The internal drive is detected.
SATA mode is unchanged unless you know you need to change it.

Dell has separate guidance for resetting BIOS/UEFI settings and for booting from USB/DVD in UEFI-based systems.

After installation

Run Windows Update until fully complete.
Install Dell drivers in this order if needed: chipset, graphics, audio, network, touchpad.

If you want factory recovery

I started with a windows 10 operating system though I think it was originally a windows 8.

I wiped it using the reset option selecting remove all files etc.

After wiping I expected it to come back with, what I expected, the normal set up asking what country and then a series of questions. This is my experience from numerous other computers I have cleared. Instead it came back with a login page showing my user name but not accepting my password as it responded that all profiles have been removed. I cannot move beyond the login.

I noted your suggestion of using a Dell recovery tool but in the bios I dont see either the DVD or USB as boot up options. I will try anyway. Thank you for that suggestion.

@anne_droid​  I have a Factory Image Recovery USB which I tried to utilise.  In starting up it does not access the drive and takes me to the login page.  This page has my user name but wont accept my password.  I was logged into the command prompt under the WDAGUtilityAccount.  Using 'net user' command I found only the WDAG user account, no other.  I checked the recognised drives and it identifies a C: drive which contains a boot directory and a recovery directory (which is empty).  It also recognises a D: drive which appears to be some remnants of the computer before cleaning as it includes files for some of the software, files, documents etc.  It has a windows subdirectory and a users subdirectory.  The users subdirectory does have ONE user with the name of the my account.  It would seem that this is an incompletely deleted version of what was on drive C: How do I force it to execute the clean and boot facility under these conditions?  How do I get it to interrogate the USB drive?  I think from memory that USB is not listed as one of the possible boot drives. Any assistance you can offer would be most appreciated.

A picture of the said login screen may help.

Power off the laptop.
Power on and tap F12 repeatedly at the Alienware logo.
Use the boot/recovery menu to start SupportAssist OS Recovery or boot from a Dell recovery USB.
Follow the prompts to erase and reinstall Windows.

Thank you for your advice. I started the system using F12 activated. This time it recognised the Factory Image Recovery USB so I selected that. It then asked for keyboard choice. From there it too me to screen image one. If you choose Continue then it returns screen image two. If you go to the advanced options (screen three) they all expect to find an earlier set point or something on the system drive and it fails. Using various choices you end up back at this screen or the log in screen (screen 4) which does not allow log in as entering the previous password it returns "User Profile Service service failed the sign in. User profile cannot be loaded."

Can I force it to load the system from the recovery USB or should I go for the one of the operating systems you identified earlier?
