Alienware m15, flashing red power button, battery doesnt work.

Alienware m15, flashing red power button, battery doesn't work, Bios date Alienware 2.6.0 10/20/2020

Hello community!

I am facing a problem with my Alienware m15 laptop (NVIDIA GeFroce GTX 1060 Start date 24 APR 2019 with, Expiration date 24 APR 2020). I will try to be as detailed as possible.

This is what happened; while playing a game suddenly my power button start flashing red. It is a repeating cycle of 8 quick flashes. Everything kept working normal, no overheat issues whatsoever. Of course I ended my game trying to see what is going on. I did a normal Windows shutdown.

When the laptop is powered off the power button keeps flashing red (each cycle 8 red flashes), but only when the battery is connected and the net adapter is in. It doesnt power on without the net adapter.

Although the battery is at 50% the laptop shuts down immediately, its behaving like a desktop PC without battery.

Diagnostics show no issues, even the battery is shown as healthy.

So the only way to start up my laptop is with my net-adapter connected. The power button as this point keeps cycling 8 red flashes. I can boot Windows normal and everything else functions completely normal.

Anyone of you had this issue?

Thank you all for reading!

These are Diagnostic-light LED codes. Is there a pause in between the flashes?

What Revision is this? Alienware M15 R(?)

You can check out the service manual here: Alienware m15 Service Manual | Dell US

Looks like it might be a system board error or chipset error. Have you updated drivers recently or installed software recently that might have changed drivers?

-Yes, there's a short pause in between the flashes.

-The System Model is just Alienware m15

Hi @Raulglz Dell Support includes Alienware m15 System diagnostic lights.

From your OP, seemingly a new OEM battery is required, because its ability to hold the as new charge capacity has reduced over time. Please power-on using ac adapter and create Battery Report How to generate a Battery Report in Windows 10 | Windows Central

For the typical user, noticeable reduction in run time generally will be observed after 18 to 24 months. For a power user, reduction in run time generally may be experienced within 18 months. Dell recommends buying a new OEM laptop battery when the run time does not meet your needs. Dell Laptop Battery - Frequently Asked Questions | Dell US

Use Dell Part Number, DP/N to search internet for new OEM replacement battery. Advocate Amazon or eBay purchase to get extra purchase protection. Look at battery's white label for Year/Month date beneath square matrix to check that it is less than 6 months.

Thanks for helping me out, I will be searching for a battery replacement. The system model shown in my laptop doesn't specify if it's an R model; do you think if i pourchase a m15 R3, R4... battery, will it be compatible with my laptop?

Hi @Raulglz only recently has Dell started to use Revision 1 (R1) as their original Model designation. So Alienware m15 continues to be valid on Dell Support webpage, although many users accept Alienware m15 R1 as being equally valid when looking for parts on the internet.

The newegg.com hyperlink does not find its target. The parts-people.com hyperlinks work but they have no stock. Internet search for "Dell OEM Laptop Battery DP/N XRGXX" reveals

Amazon.com: DGTEC New XRGXX Laptop Battery for Dell Alienware M15 R1 2018 P79F Alienware M17 R1 2019 P37E G5 5590 G7 7590 7790 Series 1F22N JJPFK 8622M HYWXJ K69WH 6YV0V(11.4V 90Wh/7500mAh) : Electronics

USA Genuine XRGXX Battery For Dell Alienware Laptop Li-Polymer 11.1V 90wh (replacement-laptop-battery.com)

The m15 R3, R4... battery, is physically different and not suitable for m15 R1 laptop.

You can ask @DELL-Cares or @DELL-Chris M  to look at Dell's internal catalogue and tell you all of the DP/N for the identical battery used on other Dell laptops. Why Dell has same battery with many different DP/N makes no commercial sense.

Raulglz,

The DELL-Cares agents never received your private Service Tag number. That makes finding the correct OEM battery part numbers difficult.

In the Pinned post, "FAQ Alienware Laptops (updated 10/21/21)", open, "Alienware Laptops naming confusion".

Hi @Raulglz thanks (Kudos) to @DELL-Chris M for providing clarification.

Please connect your Alienware m15 R1 laptop to internet and click on Product Support so that Dell can reveal your private system Service Tag ID. Do not share private information in this public forum.

Click on @DELL-Cares and send Private Message, with your private Service Tag ID and request copy of Dell's internal catalogue list of OEM battery DP/N for your system. @DELL-Cares might share this DP/N information within this public thread, so that other users can also use this information.
