M14x R1, Fresh Windows 7 install

Question

Hi everyone,

My Alienware M14X R1 HDD was dead and now replaced one, I hoped to clone the old HDD to the new one, but fail. So I lost the recovery image stored in the old HDD.

Anyone knows how to get back a Windows 7 image for my Alienware M14X?

I tried to use the OS recovery tools, but failed. It said "No OS images for the tag through images exist for the product", then where and what the image is?

I tried to call the local Dell hotline, but they seems not helpful. They said no more support on Windows 7.

I tried to download Windows 7 iso from Microsoft, but they said my licence is OEM licence and ask me to contact OEM, that's Dell right?

In the worst case is upgrade to Windows 10. But anyone knows how?

Also, anyone knows how to get back the distince Alienware theme, like the desktop background, login background, icon, etc back, if I can later successfully download an Win7/10 ISO somewhere?

Hi @jonathanpun thank you for sharing update.

There are other internet web pages that offer to provide the Windows 7 ISO.

Unless there is something really important on your original HDD, its not worth the high cost of getting it professionally restored.

IMHO you should not bother with Windows 7, move forward and get SATA SSD drive for your 2.5" bay, preinstalled with Windows 10 x64. The SATA drive can be an open tray to accept two SATA M.2 2280 cards, or a SATA brick that looks like a HDD, there are also other modern SATA 2.5" bay options, which your online research will reveal.

Download Windows 10 Pro ISO 21H1 Build 19043

You can use a USB stick, DVD, etc. to install Windows 10 x64 onto the new SATA drive. YouTube offer many videos on this topic.

Windows Update will work, but you will have to look for Dell updates from a similar old system that uses your Intel CPU and GPU. Remember to use the Intel Driver & Support Assistant.

The Alienware wall paper, etc. is available online.

Trying to keep the Alienware M14X R1 serviceable will be a struggle. Dell Support Drivers & Downloads is for Windows 7 x64, there is no Windows 10 x64 in the drop down list. Dell Support Documentation Storage says M14X R1 has one 2.5 inch SATA 2.0 (3Gb/s) Hard Disk Drive (HDD) or one SATA solid‑state drive (SSD).

Your Windows OEM licence is supplied by Microsoft. The documentation that came with the M14X R1 will include the Windows licence certificate and serial number. You may have made a separate record of all the licences for all the applications on your drive.

Download Windows 7 Disc Images (ISO Files)

All drives have a limited read/write life, SSD generally last longer than HDD. It is prudent to create a standby clone of the OS(C:) drive when it is fully functional, as part of the system's disaster Recovery Plan, so that the standby can be swapped in within minutes, to replace the original OS(C:) boot drive if it cannot be recovered.

If you have not messed with the original HDD, are you sure that the HDD has failed and/or Boot has failed because Windows operating system has a problem?

I have tried the microsoft link, but it said the key sticked at the bottom is an OEM key so asked me to contact OEM (Dell). Then how could I get a Win7 iso file?

Regarding the old ... I think it's no serviceable. One software (the HDD regenerator) even said the MBR is damaged. Still any chance?

Regarding the Windows 10 upgrade, I believe (or hope?) most drivers will be able to found through Windows Update, as it should be upgraded to Windows 10 before Microsoft stopped Win7 support, but just I was so lazy to upgrade and used it till dead.

Hi @crimsom , Thank you very much your suggestion. But where can I get a Windows 10 key? I saw someone in this forum said a Windows 7 key is ok for that, is it true?

Hi @jonathanpun thank you for sharing update.

The Windows key for your laptop should stored in the Microsoft database, which will automatically activate your windows online during the 30 day trial period. It should be possible to use your Windows 7 OEM licence key to manually activate the same type of Windows 10, it will not activate a different type Home, Professional, Enterprise, etc. Alternatively, there are many Windows 10 product keys for sale on eBay and other internet webpages.
