Drivers from DELL are always recommended as what @MaryG said but for my laptop personally Dell hasn't even updated them and so has NVIDIA so the Only Drivers needed are the Game Ready ones from NVIDIA and the Graphics driver from DELL.

I always go straight to Nvidia. Yes, Dell supposedly optimise the driver for their systems but they are often so far out of date that any optimisation isn't negated.

The Nvidia drivers should work fine. If you find that you're having issues then you can always uninstall it and go back to Dell.

Back when there were mobile versions of the cards they also released specific drivers for these. Nowadays they use the same GPU dies from the desktop cards in the laptop cards so there is no need for a mobile driver version.

@Alienware Area-51 ALX 2006  You mean what's wrong with the particular Mary G in this particular thread?  Well let's break it down:

"Dell customizes the Nvidia drivers for your exact motherboard."  I'm not sure this is true anymore for NVIDIA drivers since I haven't compared them recently.  But maybe it is.

"The ones from Nvidia will not work right."  This is contrary to the experience of everyone else who posted in this thread, all of whom said they've been using NVIDIA drivers without issue, as have many other customers who haven't posted in this thread.

"Updated drivers are for desktop computers."  NVIDIA drivers work on laptops, and in fact even when they had separate drivers for laptop GPUs, you could specifically choose laptop GPUs when trying to find the right driver for your system.  So NVIDIA does NOT publish updated drivers only for desktops.

"If the laptop ever gets an update--rarely- it must come from Dell."  Again, this is contrary to the experience of everyone else who posted in this thread, and everyone else who has ever tried to install a direct-from-NVIDIA driver package on their laptop and found that the installation succeeded and that their system operated normally.

But other than her first sentence being questionable for today's systems and all of the remaining 3 sentences being false, I guess it was fine.

I've used NVIDIA drivers on all of my laptops that have NVIDIA GPUs over the last 15 or so years and have never once had a problem.  When it comes to Intel GPU drivers, sometimes the direct-from-Intel version won't even install on the laptop (though you can force the install with Device Manager), but I've never had a problem with NVIDIA.  Mary G makes the claim she posted here in all sorts of threads around this forum.  She also repeatedly spreads a wide range of other incorrect information, especially with respect to the types of displays that can be run by laptop GPUs -- and unfortunately she continues to make the same claims even after she's been given multiple forms of clear evidence that her claims are very outdated and thus completely wrong for the systems discussed in threads here these days.  I don't understand why someone who is volunteering their time supposedly to help others would continue knowingly spreading incorrect information, but she does, so I would not consider her a reliable source.

I would also like to hear from other Dell owners particularly with Alienware Aurora. I have read the other replies saying it's fine to use the Nvidia or AMD drivers and not the Dell optimized ones. That is absolutely NOT what I have experienced with my Dell AIO with an AMD 580. I can install the AMD drivers but they always stutter. There is some type of freeze every few seconds. The only way to solve this is by going back to the "Dell Optimized AMD 580 Driver package"... now the problem with that is they will only supply driver updates for about 2 years, then you are SOL ... I suspect that they hope people will buy a new computer or buy a new support package. It's very business practices from Dell, and I wish they never bought Alienware so I could buy from Alienware directly. If anyone else can provide insight that would be great

@tahoetomahawk, a prudent way to look at it is by comparing most recent Dell/AW gfx driver release date and your gfx card's release date.

If you have a newer gfx card than last driver from Dell, assume Mfr's driver is better.
