m15 R4, how to set the iGPU as default?

Alienware m15 R4

Alienware m15 R4

Hi,

I would like to set the iGPU as the default GPU. As you can see from the image (my apologies for the Italian languages), there are many Windows processes that use the dGPU (System, Desktop Windows Manager, Runtime client-server process and the Windows Host Shell experience). I have updated the driver for both the iGPU and dGPU. However, I was not able to set the iGPU as the predefined graphic processor. When I use the Nvidia Control Panel, I cannot see the option. Neither in the Global setting nor in the program settings as you can see in the last two uploaded images. There must be a way to do this, isn't there?

My computer specs:
CPU: Intel i9-10980hk (with UHD graphics)
GPU: Nvidia RTX 3080
OS: Windows 10 21H2

Thanks!

The answer to your question is, not necessarily.  High-end Alienware systems (particularly those that ship with advanced GPUs like yours and high-refresh, high resolution screens) have generally been hardwired such that only the nVidia GPU has a path to the display - in other words, they're not capable of hybrid operation, which lower-line models usually are.

The fact that you don't see the capacity to switch the GPU in the control panel and the top-shelf hardware suggest that this system is hardwired to use only the nVidia GPU.  Opting for the Intel GPU is not possible.

Since this system shipped with the 300hz screen, it will not have a Mux Switch or even Nvidia Optimus options to enable the Intel GPU for the notebook display. As ejn63 has correctly stated, with the 300hz display on this model the dGPU will be hardwired directly to the 300hz display.

Fortunately this will allow the system to get get the best performance all the time, but it will also limit how long the system lasts on battery when it is not plugged in.

Hi @h_gius welcome to this free user-to-user Alienware laptop discussion forum.

Please look at Switchable Graphics Information for Notebooks | Dell US and

How to Switch Between Dedicated GPU and Integrated Graphics (helpdeskgeek.com)

The Italian images in the opening post do not fully assist within this English forum. Changing PC language temporally to English to capture images would have been ideal.

I would like to thank all of you for the answers.

Just a few doubts:
What could happen if I disable the GPU from the manager devices?
Do I need to keep hardware acceleration turned on (e.g. Chrome)? Is it recommended to keep my pc at the highest performance, with the fan running often?

If you disable the nVidia GPU, you'll have no displays at all.

You do not need hardware acceleration enabled to run Chrome.  And you can set the power schema as you wish, subject to the limitations that you can only use the nVidia GPU -- not the Intel one.
