m15 R6, SSD compatibility issue

Hi folks,

Just got my m15 R6 and it has been great! One little problem with it was SSD compatibility. From some reviews I had the idea at least one of the SSD slots support PCIE 4.0. Though when I tried to install a Samsung 980 Pro 2TB, the SSD won't run at slot 1 at all, and run only at PCIE 3.0 at slot 2.

More details:

Laptop: Alienware m15 R6, 11400H + RTX3060 version

SSD: Samsung 980 PRO 2TB, can be recognized in BIOS. When installed in slot 1, constant read/write timeout. When installed in slot2, run only at PCIE 3.0 protocol.

Other SSD like the original 2230 Hynix 250GB or my Samsung 980 1TB worked find in slot 1.

Thanks!

Thanks for this thread.  I've just been having similar experiences with a 1TB Kingston KC 3000 Gen 4.0 SSD I bought my girlfriend for Christmas.  Hoped it would be a great upgrade - but after realising it was failing after boot, then touching it to find it red-hot, I realised it was overheating in Slot #1.  In Slot #2 it works fine as a 'Gen 3' SSD.  Not what I wanted from a Gen 4 SSD that cost 50% more than a Gen 3.

That's great that some Samsung users seem to have got better drivers helping them, though I'm not sure how helpful Kingston's are (or if they exist).  I'll try their support software in case.  However, using Kington's included Acronis TrueImage was an awful experience on the M15 R6 - as it doesn't readily support Linux-based tools (used to boot to move partitions etc).

Before finding this page, I wrote up my experiences here if anyone's curious - https://www.reddit.com/r/Alienware/comments/10ahp75/m15_r6_pcie_gen_4_ssd_problem_kingston_kc_3000/

Hi @afme thank you for sharing the HWInfo64 investigation complete with slot capability images.

Agree that the old Dell Storage documentation is very poor and neglects to clarify NVMe slot capabilities. Dell documentation is of very little assistance and maybe misleading for Dell customers. The more recent Crucial System Advisor database also neglects to clarify NVMe slot capabilities Alienware Alienware m15 R6 | Memory RAM & SSD Upgrades | Crucial.com.
