M17x R3, low fps
I have a nine year old Alienware M17x R3 with the Nvidia GeForce 580m and all the games have low fps. Example GTA 5 was supposed to run on 60fps and I get 1 fps, even on lowest I don't get 60 fps. The temperatures are very cool and good but the games lag a lot, even using Nvidia GPU.

Just check the Device Manager and see if you have a yellow exclamation mark and a Code 43. If you do then you have a fault with the GPU.
The only other thing I can think of is that it's reverting to the Intel 3000 graphics.
I'd still open her up and check the heatsinks, fans and thermal paste.

As for 2021 I think that my GPU is failing so I'm probably ordering one from ebay

If you're getting 1fps and you know that it's running from the Nvidia GPU then it does sound like the card has an issue. 9 years is very decent from a mobile GPU if you have been using it consistently though.
Have you tried re-installing the last supported driver for the 580M directly from nvidia?
