M17x R3, rubberized coating

Alienware M17x R3

Alienware M17x R3

Hello,

I recently got my first Alienware laptop M17x R3, albeit a bit old, it runs fine. My issue is with the tacky rubberized coating on the palm-rest, the lid isn’t too bad yet. I am looking for general suggestions to combat the issue, as it is kind of annoying and having pets in the house isn’t helping the issue any.

Thank you!

The only solution is to remove the coating.  91% isopropyl alcohol should work without damaging the plastic underneath, but it will take some effort.  There are other substances that work as well.

The same issue has plagued Eton/Grundig radios for years and the solution is the same:

The other option is to replace the affected parts completely, but replacements are likely of similar age and condition.

So, I’m back on this thread because I tracked down a palm rest and lid that are near perfect condition and got them installed just today. Didn’t have to mess with any solvents or cleaners. The coating isn’t tacky.. yet .  For those of you with experience with this material, what would you recommend as a cleaner or protectant.. I was thinking along the lines of armor-all wipes or something, but I figured I’d ask here on this thread I already started.

thanks’!

I'd stay away from anything that has a strong cleaning agent in them (soap, detergent, etc). Mild ones are ok like baby wipes. Either that or just a very slightly damp cloth. A bit of water seems to be ok but it's the cleaners that seem to do the most damage over time. I've never tried Armor All wipes.
