M17x R4, can I upgrade the LCD screen?
I have an Alienware M17x R4 laptop. My 1920x1080 FHD screen died on me. Can I put in the 3840x2160 screen or can I only use the 1920x1080 screen?
If I must replace the screen only with the exact same model number of my present screen, can I find the model number of the screen without disassembling the laptop?

Most likely you can, but you'll need the entire upper assembly - not just the screen, including the shell, bezel and the wiring harness.
Try parts-people.com -- you can use your service tag to look up the compatible parts needed.

Upgrading the LCD screen on your Alienware M17x R4 laptop is possible, but compatibility is crucial. Check your laptop's documentation or contact Alienware support to confirm compatible upgrades. To find the model number without disassembling, consult the laptop's service tag or manual, or use system information tools.

I have been around these laptops for many years and I've never seen anyone successfully upgrade to a 2160 display. I'm not saying it's impossible but I don't think it's ever been done. It would be very interesting if you can get it done though. You have the LVDS and eDP ports on the motherboard so you'd have to find a display that is compatible with the eDP cable. Usually higher res displays require a different display cable but you may find one that will work.
