M17x R4, GTX 1070 upgrade?

@aliman1  Hello, yes you can use the 1070 with the 60Hz display. SG mode is the default setting for this display so all you should need is a modded Nvidia driver. 

That is correct. There are a few YouTube videos and other guides on how to do it but if you get stuck let me know. It can seem complicated but it's quite simple.

when you say modded Nvidia driver , you mean the inf file that needs to be modded correct

thanks for for your help Mattyb3. I had already ordered the 1070 and was having a mild heart attack when I read on another forum that the 1070 would only work with the 120Hz display , but this is Great news !!

I also plan on upgrading the 3630QM to the 3940XM , do you think that it is worth doing ?

Well people used to think that these cards only worked with the 120hz display because they technically need eDP support to work. They can work with LVDS displays though as they can use the Intel graphics to help bypass the eDP issue. There is a small performance drop this way though so the 120hz is best. You shouldn't have any issues but you never know, hopefully it goes well for you. 

Hopefully you bought the right format 1070 and not the MSI version like in the images in this thread. 

Yes, the 3940XM would be a good upgrade and will work well with the 1070, they aren't usually cheap though. The 3920XM is usually better value and has a history of overclocking better than the 3940. 

There are two main versions of the standard format 1070. One is a G-sync card and the other is non g-sync. One of the ID's is 1BA1 and the other is 1BE1. I forget which one is which. 

If you want to trying modding the inf now then you can just add ID lines for each of these options. 

If you want to let me know what the hardware ID is for your current card then I can quickly write up the ID line that you have to insert into the inf

Ok so do I actually need the 1070 plugged  and then read the Hardware ID , because there happens to be multiple versions of the 1070 with different Hardware ID's. my plan was to modify the INF file before my card actually gets here in about three weeks.

do i need the actual card plugged in before i can read the Hardware ID , there are multiple versions of the 1070 with different ID's . I was planning modding the INF file before the 1070 got here . What do you think ?

Hey mattyb3  I have a question for you. I have watched a few videos on modifying the INF file for the 1070 , and from what I understand there are only Two sections that need modifying , Nvidia Devices and [Strings] , so mine would be as follows  , please correct me if I'm wrong.

NVIDIA_Devices

%NVIDIA_DEV.1BA1.0551.1028% = Section066, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1BA1&SUBSYS_05511028

[Strings]

NVIDIA_DEV.1BA1.0551.1028 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070"

The 0551 is my laptop ID,  would this be correct?

Also do you think  the 240W power supply is sufficient for the 1070 ?

@aliman1 yeah that looks right to me. Just note that there are two lists of ID in the recent driver versions. One list is for Win10 and the other for Win11. When you scroll down and fine come the list of Device ID's (%NVIDIA_DEV......) add your first ID line but if you keep scrolling down further you'll see that the list starts again. Add your line into this list as well just to make sure your OS is covered. Then you can scroll right down near the bottom to add your String line.

Make sure you remember to Disable Driver Signature Enforcement right before trying to install the driver or it won't work and you'll get the 'Not compatible with this version of Windows' error.

one more question , Is my 240W PS going to be OK for the 1070 ?

It's best just to add it to both just to make sure.

The 240W should be ok if you're not going to do any overclocking but the 330W is preferred.

are you telling me to add this line      %NVIDIA_DEV.1BA1.0551.1028% = Section066, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1BA1&SUBSYS_05511028           to the top section ,   where the 1BA1 is not listed ?

Ok so no overclocking unless I get the 330W PS,  Thanks for all help mattyb3. The card should be here soon as well as a new 100% copper heatsink should help with the extra heat . I'll let you know how it goes .
