m18 R2, BIOS update question
Hello. I have never updated BIOS before, but would like to apply the new update. But when I followed the link I didn't see instructions. Is it simply a matter of downloading and using a provided installer? If it said how to on the page then I apologize for missing it and asking here. Thank you for any help.

Nevermind, I just saw the pinned topic. However, if there are any tips I would storehouse knowing them. Like, if it's a long process I'd like to know so I don't get anxious if it takes a while. Or anything else that's useful to know. Thank you.

If you post the exact model number of your system I can point you to the correct instructions. BUT if you have never done a BIOS update before and are not sure of the procedure it may be better to leave well enough alone. If the system is working well and the update does not rectify a perceived problem then I would not necessarily go to the install. The worse that can happen if you make a mistake is a bricked MB and an MB replacement. Interestingly hardware manufacturers such as HP state that a BIOS update is not necessary on a system that works well.

I appreciate the response. My rig is an m18 r2. I've read that the CPU instability issue does not apply to the 14900HX processor, but the post for the update reads that it is for 13th and 14th generation, so I am unsure whether I should apply it. I've only had it for a few days - it crashed once during minimal use (I think it did, but it may have been during a game) - plus it crashed with a message saying it was GPU related. Essentially I'm a noob with BIOS so I storehouse your help.

Also, sometimes the computer doesn't want to come out of sleep mode when I open the lid back up - don't know if that's an indication to do the update.

So, I ended up flashing 1.7.0. It went well. Thank you for your interest.

I recently purchased an Alienware M18 r2 from the Dell Outlet. In the process of setting this computer up, yesterday, I updated to BIOS 1.7.0. The computer appeared to perform the update but then flashed a message that the BIOS did not update successfully. However, the computer did reboot and works correctly and shows 1.7.0 as the BIOS version installed.
Of greater concern, to me, is that the M18 r2 Owner’s Manual that I downloaded prior to purchasing this unit, dated April 2024, Rev 02, indicates that the BIOS includes a “Keyboard Backlight Timeout on AC.” This option was not available on the BIOS that the computer shipped with (I didn’t check to see what version it was). I attempted to downgrade to an earlier BIOS (prior to release of the Owner’s Manual) but was blocked due to system security reasons (I have BIOS downgrade enabled in the BIOS). Can the Keyboard Backlight Timeout be added back to the BIOS settings? Also, the Owner’s Manual states that there is an “RGB Per Key Keyboard Color” setting, which is also not available in the 1.7.0 BIOS.
