m18 R2, multiple Blue Screen of Death errors (Jan 2025)

Alienware m18 R2

Alienware m18 R2

Hi All,

I have a Dell Alienware m18 R2 and in the last week I have had numerous Blue Screen of Deaths (BSoD) appear locking up the laptop and forcing a restart.

The BSoD's often have different stop codes but the most common have been the following:

  • 10th January 2025 - Stop Code: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL - What Failed: ntoskrnl.exe
  • 28th January 2025 - Stop Code: DAM_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT - What Failed: dam.sys
  • 29th January 2025 - Stop Code: SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION - What Failed: FLTMGR.SYS (This has displayed on regular occasions from 29th)
  • 29th January 2025 - Stop Code: MEMORY_MANAGEMENT (This has displayed on regular occasions from 29th)
  • 29th January 2025 - Stop Code: HYPERVISOR_ERROR

Other notable behaviour:

  • Not waking up. The keyboard and power button are lit but the display does not wake up. No response from any input and needs a hard restart.
  • Mouse if ofter very slow to respond and laggy when you login in either after power on or waking the laptop up.

I'm interested to hear if anyone is experiencing similar issues.

I have tried deleting the RAID 0 volume, creating a new one and performing a support assist full factory reset from the F12 menu but stilling getting occasional BSoD's and Windows Update is stalling on a couple of the lastest updates.

Thank you in advance for any advise.

Luke

I've got the exact same problems as you. BSoDs are different each time. Most are the FLTMGR.sys.

I tried reinstalling Windows for several times now. Without succes. Bought the laptop in november.

Windows Updates are very hard to install, or not at all. If they do, they take about 12 hrs to finish. M

Mouse problems, exactly as described. Sometimes slow.

@Fendtie Very interesting. I've been back and forth with Dell support and initially, they diagnosed a motherboard issue and said the part eta is 16th February 2025 having kept trying to fix the issue myself as it feels more like an os/software/driver issue.

Hopefully a patch is issued soon.

I've done several hardware tests. Nothing came up. I also think it has to be some Driver problem, but big question is which one.

I'd like to know the problem, because the laptop is useless for now.

Did you Update the Bios too?

I had the latest BIOS installed but to be sure it was ok I reinstalled it via a USB drive using the F12 menu on boot.

Still having BSoD issues though.

After trying various things I restored the entire disk from a backup and after booting I got a notification from Nvidia notifying me of a driver update. The new driver is dated 30/01/25 and after running that a couple of hours ago the system seems stable. Early days but hasn't crashed or lagged yet.

If you don't have a backup to restore to I’d suggest trying a restore with support assist and as soon as you boot install the latest Nvidia driver. If the Support Assit restore is too unstable might be worth doing a clean OS install via the Windows media creation tool and then installing the latest Nvidia driver followed by all the other drivers using support assist.

Hope that helps.

Having left the laptop on main overnight. I have return this morning to the same issues unfortunately.

I went to wake the computer but it had frozen. The power button and keyboard etc were all lit up but it would not respond to the keyboard or mouse nor opening and closing the lid.

I pressed and held the power button to restart and after taking an excessively long time to login and before actually loading the desktop I got another BSoD. The stop code was KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

It didn't work for me either. Same errors, and now i've got a new one. This laptop is just useless.

Further update.

The laptop continues not to respond in the morning with a black screen and keyboard and power button lit and the fans spinning—no response from keyboard inputs.

List of BSoD's seen recently are:

Stop Code: MEMORY_MANAGEMENT - Is the most common.

Stop Code: HYPERVISOR_ERROR - This is also common.

Stop Code: RDR_FILE_SYSTEM

Stop Code: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA - What Failed: FLTMGR.SYS

Stop Code: KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

Stop Code: VIDEO_SCHEDULER_INTERNAL_ERROR

Stop Code: SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION

Dell is due to replace the motherboard under warranty on 16th February 2025 once they have stock of the motherboard so I will report back once that is completed.

Hello i am having the exact same issues. before and after a motherboard replacement. the first time it started out as BSOD's same random codes listed above that eventually evolved into a power rail failure Dell replaced the mother board now the power rail is fixed but BSOD's render the pc useless. i cant even install the OS as it will BSOD durring the install causing the rest to corrupt. its a really nice paper weight at this point and im at a total loss on what to do.

i have,

1) replaced mother board

2) passed all hardware tests

3) Attempted to install Windows 11 home and Pro by methods of support assist as well as USB drive

4) i have even replaced ram and SSD in hopes of getting windows to install nothing

after all this im still battling with BSOD errors support assist half the time cant even install the OS

Heya i throw my hat into the ring too. It's super random. Funny enough, Hypervisor for example is deactivated by default (at least the setting is not checked) and it crashed my pc.

What i noticed is: My PC worked fine for month. I got it in September or october i believe. No issue no crash nothing. A perfect gaming beast.

It changed around early to mid January 25 when alienware rolled out the first or second firmware update.

So possibly downgrading the firmware to nov 24 could fix the issue for now. If that's even possible.

I love this laptop but this issue really kills it for me atm.

Same here. Bought the laptop in november, worked like a charm for about 4 weeks. Than all the problems started.

Don't ask me what kind of updates i've done at the time.

I got mine early January same thing was awsome. Right arround the time we got the bios update .10 is when it all began. Then .11 came out quickly after I feel like it made it worse. I thought about going back to .9 to see if there would be a diffrence. But the important note states you can't downgrade from 11 because it's locked due to security changes.

My M18 is stable for now.

Latest update i've done;

Go to Windows Update - Advanced Options - Optional Updates

There was a Dell firmware update. I did the update and since then, everything looks stable.

Sadly i forgot to write down the number, sorry for that.

Forget the above... I used this <Profanity is never allowed. DELL-Admin> thing for 4 days, never had any blue screen. Untill now... Suddenly all BSODs came back.

I'll start all over again to find any solutions.
