The system supports PCIe 3X4, so it's the limiting factor -- not the drive (that drive is PCIe 4 X4 capable).
If you're looking to add storage, any PCIe 3X4 or 4X4 drive will work, but if you're looking for faster performance, you won't find it even with a newer drive.
The WD Black drives are excellent -- so too are the Samsung 990 drives.

Support for the Alienware m15 Ryzen Edition R5 says M.2 2280/2230 SSD Storage performance is limited to the PCIe Gen3 x4 bandwidth. The WD Black SN770 1 TB Review - What Magic is This? | TechPowerUp is an excellent M.2 SSD (C:) boot drive option, look at the higher performance comparisons and conclusion in this review. The Crucial System Advisor database says 4TB SSD storage can be installed. Alienware m15 R5 | Memory RAM & SSD Upgrades | Crucial.com.
