x17, multiple displays, only show on 2 always selected on startup

This has only started recently but it is on every start up. Turning the laptop on will show the regular Alienware splash screen with the loading dots, then the screen goes black, but is still backlit, and the display switches to my second monitor. I have to then go into multiple display settings and switch it from “only show on 2” to “extend these displays”, then the laptops screen will come back on.

The laptop is set as display 1 and as the main display. Turning off multiple displays and unplugging the monitor doesn’t work. The laptop just sits on a black screen after the Alienware splash screen. Plugging the second monitor back in will immediately show the display on it. 

It behaves as if the second monitor is the main display and the laptop screen is the second display, but it knows it’s not. Any kind of Support Assist diagnostic I can run comes back normal. As I type this I wonder if it’s actually a Windows issue. Has anybody had this experience and were able to work around it?
