x17 R1, BIOS 1.9.0, high temperatures

Please help! I bought my Alienware x17 R1 late last year, and it was glorious! Temperature ranges from 75-92C at heavy games.

However, after some auto updates from Dell like Bios, etc., the temperature is now reaching 100-102C!

My machine was fine before this! Already contacted Dell Support, and they suggest replacing the heat sink (LOL). I rarely use my machine, so there is no dirt or clogging in the exhaust vents.

Anyone here faces the same issue? Please help!

If you were only hitting 74-92 degrees at full load, then you were not using the processor to its fullest.  Most likely the processor was being crippled in the BIOS.  There are a couple options in the BIOS to lower your performance to keep temps down.  It is possible a BIOS update reset some settings and you are getting more performance out of your processor, which creates more heat, which then causes more throttling.

If you think Intel Processors should not exceed 85-90 degrees, that is old-school thinking.  Gen11 and Gen12 are designed to hit 100 then throttle.  Let's just say, 100 degrees is now the new 'norm'.  Gen12 handles it much better than Gen11 with the whole P core E core stuff.

But, if the temps scare you, you can use the TCC offset in the BIOS and that will most likely help out a lot.  The trick is, to get as much performance out of the processor with minimal throttling.  Run something like Cinebench23 (free on Microsoft Store) and get a baseline score, watch your temps in HwInfo and try different TCC Offsets.  Try 1 then try 2 then try 3... if your scores got better with 2 and got worse with 3, keep it at 2.

One thing I learned with the X17 R1 and R2... They are HORRIBLE out-of-the-box.  You HAVE to tweak the system to get the best performance. Example:  Out-of the-box, the R1 3080 heavily outperformed the 3080ti in the R2.  Tweak the 3080ti with a little Afterburner and BOOM... happy GPU.

Before going into a game, Fn-F1 will be your friend... the fans will go on full speed and the performance will be maxed.  I recommend using headphones
