x17 R1, RTX 3080 16GB, low performance
Alienware x17 R1
Hey, first time here!
I have an Alienware x17 R1 with the RTX 3080 16GB and I understand the performance should be lower than a desktop card because of ventilation, size, voltage, etc.
When I play something using only the laptop display that works fine (nothing special). But when I try to play on my external monitor the FPS starts at 120+- and after a few minutes, it drops to 12...20....17FPS and it keeps changing between 90FPS and 20FPS every 1 second+-.
However, if I activate the performance mode (Fn+F1) that stabilizes at 90FPS which I believe should be correct but this mode is too noisy! Any ideas on how to solve it?
Monitor:
MSI Optix MAG342CQRV connected via DP (144hz)
Alienware x17 R1:
11th Gen Intel Core i7-11800H
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 16GB GDDR6
32GB DDR4 3200MHz
17.3" FHD (1920 x 1080) 360Hz 1ms
I've also tried to use Afterburner to monitor the performance with more details and seems like the GPU MEM MHz keeps changing from 810 MHZ (exactly) to 7200 MHz (exactly). I couldn't find this information while using Alienware Command Center.
Thanks!

The system is overheating and throttling back to save itself. If the system runs acceptably with just the internal panel active, it's likely it cannot handle the high-refresh external monitor -- leaving two options:
1. Use just the internal panel, or
2. Reduce the video settings of whatever game you're playing until you see the throttling reduced or eliminated.
Running a high-refresh external monitor is too heavy a workload for the system -- it just isn't designed to handle that.

Hey ejn63, thanks for the reply and that makes sense!
I was talking to a friend today and he explained that this external monitor is too much for the laptop when I tried to set the monitor resolution to the same as the laptop display (1920 x 1080) that worked fine, but since it's ultrawide, I got the black spaces on the sides =/
I will try to find 2 1080 monitors instead and find a way to connect both in the same mini-display port.
