x17 R2, no power

I had my laptop plugged in only with a USB-C power source (had forgotten to plug in the main adaptor and was using a USB-C dock to connect to screens). Power cut out eventually and now I cannot get it to turn on again, no response whatsoever does go to POST, fans do not run, no lights come on. The main adaptor (now plugged in) continues to have its normal white light. I tried running without the battery but still no response. I’m worried that running it off the USB-C dock power (which is obviously insufficient) has scrambled something. I have also tried removing AC adaptor and battery and discharging the static - still no luck!  Any advice?

I have the same issue, my x17r2 shut off and now I cannot get it to turn back on.  I attempted holding the power button in 30 secs without the ac adapter plugged in, as well then without the ac.

I saw something regarding doing the above, and then something about hitting/or depressing the "D" button after, however the instructions were not clear.

I imagine the laptop is just in some sort of protective mode.  I don't know.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank-you.

I do have exactly the same issue, when using USB-C power on a USB-C dock. I solved it with this: https://www.reddit.com/r/Alienware/comments/138o9o6/alienware_x17_r2_doesnt_turn_on/

So:

  • With the power surge disconnected hold power button for 30 seconds

  • after that plug in the power and press power for other 30 seconds

  • last step is holding "D" button (shift + d) and press only one time the power button; This will force the system to perform an hardware check making it power on

  • after some fancy flash on the screen a BIOS message will be shown asking if you want to go to bios or continue to windows; Just click on continue and the system will boot normally.

I had to set the bios-time. but now it is working again.

My Question:

This appears to be a product defect. Is this somehow known by dell support an can this be fixed?

No, not a product defect. Dell never shipped the x17 R2 with USB-C power adapter. The x17 R2 Setup and Specifications PDF clearly shows the usage of the shipped round plug 330W/240W AC power adapter brick. No where in that PDF does it show usage of a USB-C power adapter.

thank you very much for the quick reply!

I understand that charging via USB-C is not supported. But I'm wondering why the device goes into “protection mode” and can therefore no longer be used. Only with this complicated "reset" (which I was lucky enough to find on the internet) it was possible to get the X17R2 back to life.

Are such docking stations not supported or can they not be used with the X17R2? Or in this case, does the power supply also have to be connected before a USB-C docking station is connected?

I would have expected that charging would simply not work on USB-C. But the device fails completely and can no longer be used from this point on. Is this really "works as desinged?"

"Are such docking stations not supported"
No.

* Go to the top of the Alienware Laptops board
* Open FAQ Alienware Laptops
* Open Alienware Laptops, no dock support

A normal dock is not supported? Wow... That's very disappointing for a laptop costing several thousand euros and gives me ideas as which device I would no longer buy.
