Avamar Administrator GUI very slow to log in/move around

My Avamar Administrator GUI appears to be getting slower and slower to login/move around the interface. Has anyone else seen this, and if so what did you do to fix it? It seems to be responding fine over SSH.

I'm running Avamar 7.0.2-43 with Java 6 Update 45 on my desktop. Until recently the GUI has been responsive without issues, so I don't think it's Java. Nothing's really changed on that end.

Backups don't appear to be affected, in that they're still running as expected.

Firstly, make sure that the Avamar server and Administrator client versions are exactly the same.  This could become an issue if the Avamar server was upgraded or hotfixed with a new MCS component but the client was left alone.  To check, select Help -> About in the Administrator GUI and you should see something like this

Next, ensure that the client is running a supported version of Java (that's to say, the one provided on your Avamar server's software downloads page, probably JRE7).  Any other versions of Java should be uninstalled from the client but if you do need to run them concurrently for other software products some guidance is available here

  • KB 194051 - Using Avamar Administrator on a PC which also runs unsupported Java releases

If you still see an issue, take a look at the known issues below.  If you need further help at this stage I'd recommend opening a service request with support.  It will help if you provide information about the network between client and server as well as helping define the scope of the issue.. when the behaviour occurs, if one or a particular set of administrator clients are affected, as well as anything else you can do to narrow down the issue.

I'd also suggest gather a set of logs from the Administrator client which cover the time period of the issue so they can be uploaded to the service request for review.

A DNS issue

  • KB 192155 - Avamar Administrator GUI login takes several minutes to complete when using SSL

A bug

  • KB 177073 - Avamar Administrator v7.0 GUI performs very slowly once the activity monitor has been opened

A problem with lmaddr

  • KB 118694 - In the Avamar administrator GUI the "Administration" window takes 3-5 minutes to open (KB is accessible to EMC Partners & EMC staff)

Hope that helps..

Thanks for the reply. I called support and they took a look. It was a runaway Java process. Once we killed the process everything went back to normal.

I'm glad to hear the behaviour is back to normal again.

Was there any discussion about the root cause of the issue?  If this were just a case of killing a java process there's always a chance it could happen again.  If the affected process belonged to the Avamar server we'd be especially keen to understand what went wrong.

You've resurrected a two-and-a-half year old thread, so the issue might be different for you now than what is described here.

However, I will say that since I started this thread I have had similar symptoms in several releases (7.1.1-21, 7.3.0-233, 7.3.1-125) and the cause was the Java process on Avamar taking up more and more CPU (showing over 300% in top by the end of it). The workaround is to restart MCS. I was told that the problem is due to Avamar running out of Java heap space, so to extend the time it takes to have the GUI slowdown the workaround is to increase the maxJavaHeap value in mcserver.xml to 2G or 3G (3G is recommended for Avamar 7.5 assuming you have enough RAM on your system), and of course restart MCS after making the change.

Thanks for reply.

We does opened SR, after check we try restart MSC, but is not helped. Same we install last patch for 7.5.1, the decision did not helpt. then we killed all processes for java -  is helped. It turns out the problem was in java on the most Avamar. Thank for help.
