Avamar Windows VSS plugin with SCCM07

Question

I am having trouble getting the Windows VSS plugin to backup our SCCM 07 box running Win2008sp2. The backup keeps timing out, running over 6hrs. All of our other Win2008 servers do fine with this plugin. Does anyone have any experience with Avamar backing up SCCM 07? Here is the VSS plugin portion of the log:

I have not found a solution yet. I have emailed a support rep from our intial install last week, but I haven't heard anything yet. I am about to test tonight something I think that may be causing the issue. SCCM07 has it's own VSS service that backups the database/config. The service is called SMS_SITE_VSS_WRITER "smswriter.exe". I am going to disable this service to see if the Avamar VSS plugin will run properly. Disabling this service should not cause SCCM to crash from what I have read. If I get a full backup, them I can assume that the SCCM service is causing the issue with the Avamar VSS plugin. I will post the results.

Well, I got a full backup in 16min (26gig) when I ran a on-demand backup with the SCCM07 SMS_SITE_VSS_WRITER service disabled. I ran another on-demand backup with the service started, and it ran for over an hr which means it was failing like before. So I am assuming the SMS_SITE_VSS_WRITER service is causing the Avamar VSS plugin to fail. I am going to open a ticket with the infomation I have gathered. At least this is a work around to get a backup until I can get a fix. Thanks.
